Cloudburst at Clinton Iowa drops 4.60 inches of rain and causes $100000 damage. Leonard Webber seven of Bryant Iowa dies when his mother’s car is swept from a bridge into a flooded creek eight miles west of Clinton at about 9 p m. The father in a following car heard the mother scream but could not reach them. The mother is rescued.
Joan Hurdle granddaughter of Mrs Nell Hurdle of Newton was near a light switch when a ball of lightning struck a tree and ran along the power line to the house blowing four fuses and scorching bathroom pipes. She was paralyzed briefly but uninjured.
A deadly storm flood swept the area as rainfall began at 5 30 p m. A boy drowned after trying to reach safety while Mrs Webber could not see the bridge approaches were undamaged. City county property damage hit utilities streets highways and bridges. Traffic stalled hundreds of vehicles and bids. Fire alarms failed for hours as crews repaired lines. Dirt rocks and cinders washed onto lower streets and a car dropped into a washed out hole.

Mrs Harold Thorman of Davenport gave birth to baby girl Sally Ann weighing six pounds after being removed from a University hospital ambulance en route to a doctor’s office. The family later moved to isolation at Iowa City hospital due to whooping cough in four other children.

William Arthur Sprague aged 62 died at his home 523 Miles avenue at 6 15 am after a five months illness. He was born June 30 1877 at Port Louisa Illinois married Elizabeth James at Fort Madison in 1900 and worked as a button cutter before retirement. Survived by three children seven grandchildren one sister and his wife who died in 1917. Body at Fairbanks Home for Funerals pending arrangements.
Mount Vernon Alabama youths held an underwater endurance challenge. Seventeen year old George Moore attempted the dive and clung to a root while submerged. He won the informal contest but drowned in three feet of water.
Muscatine merchants unite for a one day only Dollar Day offering half to two thirds off, with extra staff and banners in windows as fall and winter stock moves. Sponsors promise real bargains across thousands of items and shoppers from surrounding counties will travel to Muscatine.
