London dispatch details British Q ships using ruses to trap submarines including the famous woman and baby tactic that destroyed a U boat. Other exploits include haystack disguises and Captain Gordon Campbell's Victoria Cross. Also notes destroyer launch Mc Dearmut at Squantum shipyard.
London reports an Aug 6 war office bulletin saying German guns were active north of Villers-Bretonneux near Amiens. An enemy attempt to seize a British post northeast of Morris on the Flanders front was repulsed by a counterattack. A few prisoners and machine guns were captured in Nieppe Forest.
The British schooner Gladys J Holland was sunk by a German sub off Nova Scotia. Two killed and eight Americans survived on Warilda after torpedoing near a port. Rescue efforts saved many, with confirmed drownings and wounded among the crew and nurses aboard.
Paris reports a strife between German crown prince and Crown Prince Rupprecht over the northern push in the 1918 offensive between Soissons and Rheims. Ludendorff-backed plan favored the north, while the crown prince sought a southern drive toward Paris. The latest July 15 to 18 assault stalled after three days.

Three people are dead after a hotel shooting in Canova S D. on August 6 Mystery surrounds the tragedy. Victims include Mrs F Dexter wife of a Canova banker J R Williams of Anderson Missouri and a woman believed to be Williams wife. Williams is thought to have fatally wounded Mrs Dexter and then killed himself. The sole witness was a boy who arrived with the Williams party the previous afternoon.
Paris faces renewed German bombardment as long range shells fall on the city. Crowds ignore blasts with cynical remarks and jokes while some express rage at reports that women and children were killed. An American soldier vows that each shot will cost Hitler a great pain.
Zurich reports Admiral Von Capelle the German minister of marine will resign soon. He succeeded Von Tirpitz in March 1916 and his departure may relate to the retirement of Naval General Staff head Von Holtzendorff announced August 2. Holtzendorff had apologized for German submarine failures to sink American transports.
London July 20 Lady Rhondda widow of the late viscount and British food controller proposes to claim her rights as a peeress to sit in the house of lords according to the Manchester Guardian. She supports gender equality and has aided efforts to align British practice with traditional theories. Viscount Rhondda left no male heir and his only child is a daughter Lady Mackworth.
London bulletin reports the landing of allied naval and military forces at Archangel on August 2 in accordance with Russian wishes, marking a concerted action in Russia. In Washington T G Masaryk commends President Wilson for aiding the Czecho Slovak army, stating Prague honors the American leader and pledges enduring gratitude. Copies of the letter were sent to British, French, Italian and Japanese ambassadors to acknowledge allied cooperation.
Washington August 6 urgent recommendation for haste from Provost Marshal General Crowder and a plan to set September 6 as the registration day for about 13 million men aged 18 to 45. The bill requires registration for military service and calls for immediate steps to fit draft quotas after September 1. Committee chair Chamberlain said statements from Secretary Baker and General March would be sought and reconvening Congress was not yet decided.
Timothy Hanley, steward of the Dubuque county poor farm, resigned under pressure after a committee charged neglect and misused funds. The move follows a supervisors meeting and state agent investigations, linked to ouster actions against county officials by the attorney general two weeks earlier.
London reports state a German Zeppelin raid on the east coast last night ended in failure. One airship was shot down in flames about 40 miles from the coast while another was damaged and likely reached its base. The RAF and naval units engaged three Zeppelins during the operation.

London reports the death of Violet Long a leader of Britain’s women soldiers known as Tommywanes in the torpedoing of the ambulance transport Warilda. She disappeared after becoming entangled in rope while boarding a boat during a last trip to France and is presumed lost at sea. Her sister helped start the corps early in the war and witnessed the tragedy.
Paris reports indicate German efforts north of the Vesle have failed to weaken Allied stabilization. French and American forces advance near Montdidier and Braches, with progress toward Avre. Yanks seize guns near Vesle and capture enemy artillery crews, while Germans reorganize shattered divisions behind the lines as Crown Prince Rupprecht lends divisions northward. In Louisville, the Courier Journal and Times pass to Worth Bingham.
