Pennsylvania moves to a $76 million a year relief work program. It requires aid recipients to work or lose relief and uses state funds, not federal. Projects include highways, buildings, parks, and streams.
Moody brothers Hunter and Humphrey continue circling Springfield Municipal Airport in a 55 horsepower monoplane past 300 hours. They shattered the light plane endurance record of 218 hours last Tuesday and aim to extend the light plane mark while postponing heavy plane attempts. The brothers said they will stay aloft as long as they feel able and the motor runs well, delaying immediate landing.
A 20 ton boulder broke from the ceiling at Laurel Hill tunnel in Somerset County killing four men and injuring another. Victims named include Walter Daley 28 Ola Schooling 25 Leonard Anderson 26 and William Leach 33 who died after an arm was crushed and a doctor performed an amputation en route to hospital.
An airplane crashed on a farm near Urbana Illinois killing Leonard Field 24 of Dakota City Nebraska an aviation instructor. Harry R Ely an aviation student from Fort Collins Colorado died later from head injuries fractured jaw and arm. The cub type plane with a 40 horsepower engine stalled at about 500 feet witnesses said. Field died at the scene Ely was taken to Burnham City hospital Champaign. Relatives planned burial in South Sioux City.
The Bologna newspaper Il Resto De Carlino urged Great Britain to return Gibraltar to Spain in a front page appeal reported from Rome.
Partly cloudy and warmer tonight in northeast and south central areas. Sunday remains partly cloudy with possible threats. River stages show minor rises and falls at several points. Next week outlook calls for scattered thundershowers in some regions with generally fair skies and near normal to slightly above temperatures.

Harry G. Barnes, longtime University of Iowa speech professor, will become examiner and registrar. He succeeds H. C. Dorcas who resigned to return as professor of education. The change is effective Monday in Iowa City.
In Los Angeles Virginia Karliner 21 reportedly swallowed 271 bent pins for unknown reasons. Hospital attendants say she will likely survive after all pins were recovered. Her father Abraham Karliner said she had been unusually moody.
Louis J. Taber of Columbus Ohio national Grangemaster urged the U S to quit world entanglements and attack idle acres idle dollars and idle men. He spoke at the rededication of the New England Grange headquarters in Springfield Mass stressing self regulated crop production and local cooperative supervision over Washington.

Federal mediator William F. White left Muscatine after two trips without resolving the Hawkeye Pearl Button Co. strike now in week seven. He said he would return if the dispute remains unsettled and outlined union and company positions on wage increases and arbitration.
A conference panel approved an $185 million deficiency bill with a $119,599,918 Commodity Credit Corp. allocation to bolster farm prices. Some members opposed the report as the Senate and House trimmed about $4 million from the Senate version. The measure moves to the Senate then adjournment, while social security talks proceed.
Des pite economy pleas, Congress approved more than 13.15 billion dollars in peacetime appropriations for the coming year. The total, debated by Democrats and Republicans, includes nearly 1.78 billion for relief, 1.78 billion for defense, and funds to reorganize government agencies.
The Rev. G. H. Smith pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at Wilton and his son Stanley were unharmed after a three way car crash at Sudbury Ontario. Their car teetered on a 10 foot embankment as it slammed into a truck and another auto. The family, visiting Michigan, expected to return early next week.
Amsterdam reports a 51 gun salute for Crown Princess Juliana as she births their second child, a daughter. The nation briefly rues not seeing a son, but rejoices that the princess and consort Prince Bernhard are both well and the baby weighs 8 12 pounds.
The chamber blocked two amendments restoring the prevailing wage for WPA workers and extending furlough rules for those on WPA rolls. A Senate modification to the president's lending bill died when the House would not take up the measure, delaying any changes to next year.
Imperial Airways 24 ton flying boat Caribou left Southampton with 1500 pounds of mail for Canada and the United States. After refueling over Ireland it heads to Botwood Newfoundland then Montreal and Port Washington New York arriving about 9 pm CST Sunday. The Caribou and Cabot run weekly mail flights in August and September no passengers. Pilot was Capt J C Kelly Rogers assisted by Capt S G Long.
An Armour and Co. employee vote in Oklahoma City rejected recognition of a CIO packinghouse workers union as exclusive bargaining agent by 333 to 308. John F. Lebus of the NLRB supervised, noting it was the union's first loss. 700 eligible employees were certified to vote.
