In Piatigorsk on August 5 General Karakozoff former governor general of Odessa was shot and killed. The assassin fled. As governor general he banished Odessa's mayor for attending the Moscow Zemstvo congress and later ordered police to fire on demonstrators.
James L. Williams an itinerant preacher known as an evangelist was killed in Mount Vernon Illinois on a Saturday night. He formerly lived in Dahlgren Illinois and came to visit relatives when a single close range shot ended his life. A hymn book was found in his pocket as authorities investigate motive and suspect conditions.
Attorneys for the next friend in the suit against Mrs. Mary Baker G Eddy said they knew nothing of a Deadwood report that George W Glover son of Mrs Eddy and a plaintiff had received a message from his mother and started east to withdraw from the case It is believed Mr Glover and his daughter are en route to testify in the action
Angers France Aug 5 Forty passengers and the engineer were drowned when a local train derailed and plunged from a bridge into the Loire near Les Ponts de Ce. The wreck destroyed the stone wall guarding the approach and all aboard in the carriages disappeared beneath the river waves.
Diamonds of fine quality were discovered in blue volcanic clay in Pike county Arkansas near Murfreesboro. The find is the first of its kind in America with a geological setting similar to Kimberly. A surface mining sample yielded 140 stones ranging from 1/4 to 1 2 carats.
Lincoln Aug. 5. Mrs. Nannie Curtis, national organizer of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, told Epworth Assembly listeners that suggestive pictures in Southern saloons incite assaults on Southern women by Black men. She said saloons have robbed white women of loved ones and homes, and now clothes, hanging them on saloon walls to inflame passions.
In Ottumwa Iowa a sixth man, N P Anderson, was found to have died by his own hand in the Des Moines river, deepening the tragedy after the deaths of five local residents. Mrs W H Powell and her husband were recovered, Hallie Powell was found nearby, while Mrs J F Stevens and her daughter remained missing.
Federal Judge Landis ordered the dissolution of the church and school furniture trust after fines totaling 43 000 for anti trust violations. Judge Vah deventer enjoined Arkansas secretary of state from forfeiting the Rock Island road’s right to do business in Arkansas pending determination of authority.
Turkish troops crossed the Persian northwest frontier and attacked Havaneh near Urumiah. Eighteen men and sixty women and children, mostly Christians, were killed as the village was destroyed. Persian cavalry later joined the invaders threatening Urumiah, a city with 30 000 to 50 000 residents. Casabl anc a quiet. In Boone Iowa on August 5 a 19 month old girl, daughter of Frank Cooper, pulled a washing machine plug and scalding water poured over her. She died yesterday at Mercy Hospital from severe burns.
J M Scott city editor of the Helena World was found dead on the sidewalk at 2 o clock. Two bullets struck his head. A prior attempt on his life a month earlier involved two shots. Officials and locals link the murder to a personal quarrel.

Boston, Aug 5 five Chinamen arrested in Friday night fatal clash in Chinatown plus two others held at Worcester and brought to Boston were arraigned and held without bail on murder charges. Grand jury likely this week. Three of the injured Chinamen at the emergency hospital died during the day.

In Dayton Ohio Abe Gordon a traveling salesman was shot and fatally wounded and Anna Markowitz was assaulted and killed near the National Soldiers’ Home. Sisters Bertha and brothers James and Jacob Markowitz are held as suspects after investigators traced the assault and murder through a wooded path.
Duluth August 5. The Mesaba range strike is over. Practically all mines in the affected region are at work this morning with miners back on active duty and production resuming.
