A crime outbreak at Jelissavetopol Russia ends in heavy losses as 34 convicts are killed and 73 wounded. Twenty soldiers are injured. The ringleader is executed publicly and fifteen convicts are sent to dark dungeons with others flogged. Some victims reportedly die from injuries.
In Hunt county Texas prohibition began at midnight with many intoxicated in Greenville. Bearl Austin Toby Jackson and Pete Dewey drank from a large bottle in a farm wagon. Austin toppled to the floor after a final long pull and died, naming his last drink as he fell.
Davenport August 4 local stamp notice. Revenue stamps are again for sale at the Davenport post office building office of D B Morehouse. The supply was sent to Burlington for office checking while Collector J H Kemble was away and H O Weaver acted in Davenport Republican.
A Santa Fe passenger train returning from Redonda crashed into an open switch and collided with an oil train. Fireman Martin is missing and four people were injured. The oil ignited, burning the cars and Coombs refining company plant.
In Cedar Rapids Iowa on August 4 Edna Peck Maden aged 65 was assaulted in her Hartford area residence. Bert Rennick a paroled convict was arrested and authorities say the evidence is strong.
Police raided the Eighth regiment armory in Akron at 3 AM arresting several soldiers who resisted with furniture as missiles. The regiment, on the verge of leaving for Newark camp, created a night of yells and projectiles. All will be court martialed.
In Camal near Williamsport Pennsylvania on August 4 Mrs. John Edwards wife of a New York Central railroad foreman faced down a mob of Italians threatening to kill her husband. She stood at the door with a revolver and warned the crowd while Edwards slipped out through a rear door and fled town.
Memphis August 4 Clever Miller a local middleweight was set upon by Horace Graham and Lee Johnson both colored and rough handled as he returned from a picnic the attackers stoned him almost to death in the street
Commodore Joseph E. Montgomery, a Confederate veteran and commander who during the Civil War nearly captured General Grant, died this morning at his son’s Chicago home.
Dallas Aug 4. C W Merchant J H Parramore and R G Anderson of Abilene and Cape Willingham of McMillan Texas and others arrived in Dallas en route to Canada to engage a range for next season. They expect to pasture about 200000 head of cattle there as an alternative to sending cattle to the Dakotas and Wyoming.
David McNicol of Montreal told a St. Paul railroad official that the Canadian Pacific plans to enter American territory and secure its own line into St Paul or a closely controlled line to gain a grain outlet in Duluth. The announcement marks the first definite step in expanding across the border.

Aaron Halles was electrocuted at Sing Sing prison at six this morning for the murder of Mary McCarthy in a New York department store in May 1900. He faced the act calmly, marking the sixty second execution since the law began. Halles had pursued the girl, shot her at the counter after she rejected his advances, lit a cigarette, and said he was glad he did it.
Saturday afternoon Judge A J House heard the demurrer to the amended petition in Clymer A Coldren versus the City of Muscatine and the Peoples Light and Power Co. City Attorney Arthur Hoffman and former city attorney John F Devitt defended for the defendants while C A Coldren represented himself. The judge said he would consider the matter for a few days and issue a decision. Muscatine attorneys returned on the late train Saturday night.

Miss Nora Dale, a labeler and helper at the oat meal mill, had her hair caught in a folding shaft while clearing dust from a machine. The braid wound around the shaft, six inches of her hand were severed, and she suffered shock. she is recovering at home with no lasting injuries besides hair loss.
