About 18 000 CIO United Auto Workers at Caterpillar ratified a three year contract after a three day strike. The deal raises wages from 4 to 8 cents for higher classifications, 6 cents next August and 7 cents for those earning 2 60 or more, includes a 12 cent night shift premium and cost of living adjustments. It provides a layoff plan similar to GM and Ford and liberalized pension and insurance programs. Negotiations continue with Deere Allis-Chalmers and International Harvester.
Congress ends a seven month session with mutual compliments as major bills rush to Eisenhower including housing polio vaccine defense, loans to small business and a funding bill. Some clashes over atomic vessels highway school construction and tax plans linger into 1956 election year.
Ottumwa and Austin reports detail 14 cent hourly increases for about 3,000 Morrell employees at Ottumwa and 5,000 Hormel workers in Austin under new contracts. The raises raise unskilled male base pay to 1.69 dollars per hour, with women at 1.65, retroactive to August 1 and tied to contract ratification.

The Iowa State Health Department will begin gamma globulin inoculations today in Donnellson and a five mile radius to curb polio. Donnellson has had nine polio cases with two fatalities, and a limited gamma globulin supply has been allocated from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
Police report a husband, Fred Rodgers, enraged during a dispute with his wife Larlene, set their house on fire. The home burned to the ground. Rodgers was detained as investigators consider charges. Larlene and the three children left for a park. Rodgers later admitted starting the fire.
A 21-year-old woman waded into Mattoon lake shore and drowned after signaling an unidentified car driver who brought her there. Two bystanders reported the incident to authorities.
Eleven Soviet agricultural officials viewed Dakota Wheat Growers Assn terminal elevator in Aberdeen, the state’s largest grain storage with capacity over 500,000 bushels. The tour covered about 250 miles with stops at Mitchell’s Corn Palace and local wheat farms near Redfield, Mellette, and Lincoln Ranch near Aberdeen.

About 20 long distance operators of Northwestern Bell walked off for four hours Tuesday afternoon to protest the lack of air conditioning in the Dubuque office. They returned to work at the request of officials of CIO Communication Workers.
