Muscatine civil defense director Earl Jones reminded residents that sirens will be tested next Monday at 3 p.m. on the first Monday of each month to ensure operation. The test will sound briefly four times. six sirens currently cover storms and emergencies, with a request filed for six more to improve coverage.
The Muscatine chapter announces August activities including a public trap shoot at 11 a.m. Sunday and a board meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday Aug. 21. An appreciation party for president Howard Stolley is set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday Aug. 30. The Muscatine American Legion Edward H. Bitter Post No. 27 held its officer election on Thursday evening. Elected were Albert Weeks as commander Glen Crow first vice commander Dave Watson second vice commander Cal T. Rowe adjutant Joe Montgomery finance officer Ray Wickers and Kenneth Wiley sergeants at arms Ray Whittaker historian Louise Dude Butler Ralph Connell Roscoe Anderson and Ray Grimm named to the executive board and chaplain respectively.

Walter Tomasson, 43, of 1019 Hill Ave, Davenport, remained in satisfactory condition at St Luke's hospital after a Thursday cave-in at an Interstate 74 sewer line excavation at Bettendorf. Employed by Schmidt Construction Company, he was about 15 feet below the surface when a wall gave way, causing scrapes and several cracked ribs.
The Iowa Commerce Commission approved Gulf Central Pipeline Company to build 468 miles of a 2000 mile line connecting Gulf Coast to Iowa Illinois Indiana Nebraska and Missouri. The route passes Muscatine Fort Madison Burlington Sioux City and spreads through Lee Washington Henry Mason Spencer and Harrison counties with tie ins to Monsanto in Muscatine and other ammonia terminals. The commission urged precautions to avoid interfering with farming.
