An advertisement touts Pape's Diapepsin as a quick cure for sour stomach and indigestion outlining how a 22 grain tablet after meals will digest 3 000 grains of food. It claims relief from gas belching heartburn and stomach pain and promises meals without misery.
Court of Honor session at the Olds building featured a program and social dance despite bad weather. Two candidates were initiated and H G Schoenig and J C Coster will represent Muscatine at the Illinois supreme lodge session in Springfield May 19 to 21, with up to 2 000 delegates expected. Local performances by Markee and Clara Wagner plus solos and recitations followed the business meeting.
Father Vaughan, a well known cleric, will lecture in Muscatine at the Grand Opera House in late May. The Knights of Columbus voted to sponsor the event and arrange details. He previously appeared on a chautauqua program in which his Sermons from Shakespeare was well received.
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows local lodge marked its eighty ninth founding anniversary with a merit filled program and social hour. Henry Werner gave the welcome and Mae Kent, Josephine Stirlen, and Miss Mundt performed readings, duets and solos as A W Scott spoke on the order’s principles and work. Miriam Rebekah lodge and auxiliary members outlined benefits before a final violin solo closed the event.
Three nine year old boys found a thirty two caliber revolver in a trunk at 1114 East Fourth Street and played with it upstairs. Ray Shepard aimed at Carl Stark and pulled the trigger missing by inches, triggering a frightening scene witnessed by Mrs. Nick Stark. Authorities say the boys likely did not know the gun was loaded, making the narrow escape a fortunate accident.
Company C attended the 9 oclock performance at the Bijou last night as guests of Manager A M Gollos. A special act for the soldier boys failed to arrive due to train delays, but the boys praised the show and thanked Gollos for his generosity. Manager Gollos lamented not presenting the planned act though the production received high praise.
Local advertisement claims deafness from Eustachian tube inflammation can only be cured by constitutional remedies. It asserts nine of ten cases stem from catarrh and offers one hundred dollars for any deafness case cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Includes solicitation for circulars and mentions Hall's Pills for constipation.
Kate McBride files for divorce in Muscatine County Iowa claiming marriage on February 23 1897 and desertion in 1898. She seeks decree of divorce and equitable relief with court term starting June 1 1908. Charles McBride warned to appear by noon of the second day or default judgment will be entered.
