Hawkeye State Bank names G Nelson as executive vice president

Gerald D. Jerry Nelson of Muscatine, formerly with First National Bank, Muscatine, will become executive vice president of Hawkeye State Bank in Iowa City. The bank, charted four years ago, has 22 employees, a new branch opening in a shopping center, and is part of a private group with banks in Clear Lake Marengo and Iowa City. Nelson has served since 1959 and was last year manager of the installment loan department. He is past chairman of the installment loan committee of the Iowa Bankers Association and serves on the Chamber of Commerce board and Muscatine Kiwanis club committee.

Muscatine Music Assn Workers Meet Thursday

Muscatine County Music Association membership drive volunteers will gather Thursday April 24 at 7 40 PM in the Public Library meeting room. The meeting will provide association information, train workers to contact potential members, and outline next season concert outreach with twenty teams led by a leader and three helpers. Refreshments will be served.

Hayes and two others quit Eastern Iowa Community College board

Three of the nine EICC board members submitted resignations Monday night. Presidents Norman Kelinson Edgar Jorgenson Clinton and Harold O Hayes Jr Muscatine are resigning. Hayes moves to Evansville Ind to become director of manufacturing for Faultress Caster Co. Kelinson and Jorgenson cite careful consideration and soul searching. Hayes criticizes the board controversy over ouster of Supt Robert W Johnsen. Hayes resignation takes effect at May end. other two at Monday meeting.

Cornell alumni dinner set for Muscatine Iowa Room

Cornell College alumni and friends in the Muscatine area will dine at Hotel Muscatine in the Iowa Room on Thursday May 1 at 6 40 p m. Club officers Eula M Downer Philip A Temple Janet Hahn Barry and others will attend with College staff member Robert Majors and Alumni Director Paul K Scott to report on college events.

Levee patrols begin Flood control center opens Wednesday

Muscatine prepares for Mississippi River rise with a flood control center at city hall operating 24 hours daily. The Rock Island Corps of Engineers opened an office in city hall with Arnold Kolmgrain as local consultant. Five levee patrols will cover the riverfront, Mad Creek, and island areas, with volunteers stepping in as water nears 22 feet. Sandbags and sandbagging teams are organized, and city departments will assist in temporary flood control duties. The government weather service forecasts a 20.1 ft crest by Thursday and 22 ft stage possibility at Mad Creek by April 29.

Car pools urged to free Riverfront parking space

Muscatine downtown merchants were urged to form employee car pools to free parking for shoppers after riverfront lot loss. The recommendation came from Clyde Hubble, chair of the Chamber of Commerce parking committee, and George A. Silberhorn, chair of the retail committee.

Correction on Migrant Committee Board Members

The Muscatine Journal corrected an error that listed Julian Vega Lupe Rivera and Julio Gonzales as board members. Gonzales is a vice president and Timais Migrant Council employee. Vega and Rivera attend meetings as interested persons without voting rights. They co chair the local CEO boycott of Heinz products.

Blaze Destroys Garage on Jivans Street in Fire

Muscatine firemen extinguished a blaze that wiped out a garage and its contents at 504 Jivans Street just after midnight. Owner Arthur Hill reported no cause yet determined as the fire, which began around 12:25 a m, destroyed fish traps and other stored items.

Izaak Walton League District Meeting in Muscatine Sunday

The Muscatine Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America will host the Second District Chapter Officers and Directors meeting at Fairport on April 27 starting at 10 am. District Director Henry Brandt will lead the session with Dale Brentnan and Robert C. Russell on the program. Iowa State Senator David Stanley will speak and discuss national state chapter and member activities and their impact on conservation and outdoor recreation. Howard Stolley of Muscatine is president of the host chapter with representatives from ten chapters across Muscatine Scott Louisa Washington Johnson Cedar Keokuk and Iowa counties attending.

YWCA Muscatine plans five summer day camps

YWCA and Muscatine YMCA sponsor five summer day camps for boys aged 7 to 9 from June through August. Camps run Monday to Friday at Grain Processing Corp. park on the Mississippi River about 13 miles south of Muscatine. Morning activities include games, crafts, and songs. afternoons feature story hour, hikes, scrapbook projects, and a swim. Wednesdays feature the Summer Fun Club visiting local businesses and facilities. Fees are 15 for members and 17 for non-members. Contact Bill Albright at 263-4813.

Smith wins debate honor at Wartburg College

Kemith Smith of Muscatine, a Wartburg College senior in Waverly, receives the Degree of Highest Distinction in Debate from Phi Kappa Delta. He has participated in 90 decision debates over three years and won 33 times, placing him in the upper five percent of his class.

Journal Names New Classified Ad Manager and Circulation Chief

H. L. Nelson announces two staff moves at the Muscatine Journal. Sam Childs becomes the new classified advertising manager, while Ray Sprouse takes over as circulation manager. Sprouse will oversee delivery by carrier salesmen in Muscatine and surrounding towns, bringing 12 years of Des Moines Register circulation experience to the role.

Car damage in collision with truck in Muscatine

A car driven by 17 year old Stephen Joseph Drahaus of Muscatine sustained left front and rear fender damage after a collision with a tractor trailer rig on West 8th Street at 8 p.m. Monday. The truck, owned by Van Speron Co. of Hospers, was driven by 35 year old Thomas Harold Ruden of LeMars Iowa, who traveled in the inside lane when the crash occurred. No truck damage reported.
