Four Buildings Lost In Keokuk Blaze
A fire in Keokuk caused the destruction of four buildings in a redevelopment area near the Mississippi River front. The blaze began with an explosion in a four story brick building housing Gem City Transfer Mayflower Warehouse and Humes Distributing Co and spread to the Trade and Labor Temple. The Grand Hotel residents were evacuated as embers blew seven blocks. Fire crews from multiple towns aided, with one captain hospitalized and a woman injured. Damaged structures included the Beaty Machine Shop HL & Garage and the old public library. The cause remained under investigation.

Burns Fatal to Space Mechanic at Cape Kennedy

Lee County grand jury returned an indictment charging Jerry Louis Parsons a 27 year old state penitentiary convict with murder in the fatal stabbing of fellow prisoner Karl Lee Bonjour 26 in a prison yard melee at Fort Madison Parsons had entered the penitentiary in 1963 to serve a two year term for robbery with aggravation in Chariton He was to be arraigned in Lee County District Court Agents of the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation spent about a week on the case and turned findings over to the grand jury The warden said he would have no further comment on the case
