Deputy sheriffs Carroll Furst and Robert Scott of Rock Island County join Fred E. Brown in examining the wreckage of the Brown home where a morning tank blast ripped through, splintering stairways and tearing into the roof as debris scattered.
Carroll Furst, Rock Island deputy sheriff, and Fred Brown discovered the battered hot water tank after an explosion wrecked the Brown home on route 1 in Mingis. The two men stood on highway 92 right of way as Brown and his wife Evelyn escaped via a broken upstairs window and the enclosed front porch to reach the trees.
A strong quake rattled northern Yugoslavia and parts of Hungary, injuring over 100 people and causing panic across nearby nations. Buildings swayed in Belgrade as schools, factories, and offices closed. one death was reported near the epicenter about 125 miles west of Belgrade.
A deadly tornado struck Yorktown in southwest Iowa, killing a 90 year old woman and injuring a 16 year old boy. The storm devastated homes and damaged much of the town, with extensive flooding along the East Nishnabotna River and high water across Atlantic and surrounding areas. Police report 95 percent of buildings battered, roads washed out, and local utilities disrupted as residents evacuate and seek help.
Rochester Minnesota reported severe wind damage across a two to three mile strip from the city edge with no injuries. The Holiday Inn Motel suffered roof damage to the office and dining area, a sun deck at the Arthur Hotel was wrecked, and a large sign fell. Corrugated metal from the Fairgrounds grandstand blew into Crossroads Shopping Center near Mayo Clinic with no damage reported there.
Survivors search debris across eastern Kansas western Missouri and southwestern Iowa after a string of tornadoes. Six dead and numerous injured as storms toppled homes, businesses and vehicles. Witnesses report powerful winds lifting vehicles and wrecking towns from Garnett Kansas to Yorktown Iowa and Pleasant Grove Missouri.
Maj. Virgil T. Grissom and Lt. Cmdr. John W. Young were chosen as the pilots for the two man Gemini test flight a three orbit mission slated for later this year. The backup crew will be Cmdr. Walter M. Schirra Jr. and Maj. Thomas P. Stafford.
Anchorage reports high spring tides driving sea water into sunk areas from the March quake. Builders raise foundations and construct dikes to protect sunken businesses as flooding becomes the major ongoing issue. The casualty list remains 114 dead or missing with damage near 850 million dollars. Land along the Gulf of Alaska rim including the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island has sunk up to three feet in some places.
An exploding water heater in a two story frame house at the end of the Mississippi bridge sent the inner tank upward through the roof. Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Brown escaped from a bedroom window with minor shock. The blast heavily damaged the basement and stairwell, left the house filled with smoke and dust, and knocked out electric and telephone service. No injuries were reported. Investigators from Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office examined the scene and began a probe.
Gov Harold Hughes said Yorktown may be declared a disaster area after a Sunday tornado leveled the town. He noted a survey by helicopter was cancelled due to high winds and no formal request for aid had been received from the southwest Iowa community of about 150.
Illinois voters prepare for a large GOP delegate selection with 48 district posts to be filled Tuesday and 10 statewide delegates at the next party convention. Goldwater leads in several states, with Nixon and Rockefeller also holding support, while Democratic action centers on North Dakota's convention and primary.
The Associated Press reports Iowa saw nine more traffic fatalities over the weekend, raising the toll from the prior year. Victims include Betty Jean Lehew, 10, of near Walker. David Luchinske, 9, of Fairfax. Ricky Halstead, 15, of Emmetsburg. Vicki Thiltgen, 6, of Farley. Ruth McGovern, 19, of Cedar Rapids. and others. Causative incidents involve a car striking a child chasing a dog, bicycle collisions, and vehicles overturning or colliding with obstacles across several counties.
Fighting between Greek and Turkish Cypriots persisted for a third day in Kyrenia Pass near Nicosia. Gunfire resumed at about 7 a.m. after UN spotter aircraft swept the ridge. No all-out Greek assault appeared imminent.
