Governor McSweeney, after reviewing the law, announced he would prevent any prize fight in Charleston. Reporters said promoters planned to present their case in Washington but the governor has settled the matter locally.
Boston April 8 a new feature for a hotel for working girls the Franklin Square House will include courting parlors where girls may host gentlemen friends. Rev Dr George L Perrin president noted a dozen small semi private parlors on the office floor are being fitted for this use in the New England Conservatory of Music building.
Washington April 8 The senate hears a protest telegram signed by Claus Spreckels H D Scott and others against a Chinese exclusion bill while 319 Honolulu residents petition to ban Chinese and Japanese laborers from US territories. The insular affairs committee finishes Philippine civil government work and Cuba reciprocity tax steps begin. The naval committee backs Holland type submarine boat funding.
The article reports that Manshiem, the bartender, allegedly shot his accomplice Dixon after a dispute over stolen money during a Hollister saloon robbery. Dixon died or was wounded and Manshiem was taken to Leadville. The youth had lived near Wilton and was raised by adopted parents but appeared ungrateful.

Washington Iowa April 8 The parents of Rev D E Smith formerly of this place received word that he was held up by highwaymen recently at Lincoln Neb He was relieved of a valuable gold watch presented to him by his former Pawnee City congregation He lost ten dollars a knife and keys Three other parties were held up by the same men Two of the trio were captured at Omaha but the one with the valuables escaped.
In Dubuque Iowa on April 8 C H Berg who has served two terms as mayor was re-elected on the citizens ticket by a likely 3100 plurality. The Democrats fielded no regular nominee but John Babcock ran as an independent pledging to enforce the mulot law if elected. The citizens ticket majorities prevailed while socialists proved more influential than expected.
Boone Iowa April 8 convention date set for May 13 at Fort Dodge. It is expected that Congressman Connor will be renominated by acclamation. Early convention was desired and the date is regarded as satisfactory.
The remains of Cecil Rhodes arrived in Buidwyo with public demonstrations of sorrow. The body is to be buried in the Matoppo hills on Thursday.
In Cork on April 8 authorities fear last nights pro Boer demonstration may be repeated tonight. Both factions prepare and serious trouble is anticipated as authorities brace for further clashes.

Fort Dodge Iowa April 8 Hon Geo E Roberts director of the mint denied rumors he would curb gold coinage and said the mints are open by law to free coinage and must receive all that is brought to them noting the claim as absurd.
Clarence Hollister alias Clarence Mackenzie, a 19 year old inmate at the Industrial School Eldora, is jailed by Sheriff Collen Take County Colorado for the murder of J. E. Mansheim and another man on September 10, 1901. Hollister, sent to the reform school in 1895, escaped in 1899 and returned last year after alleged saloon hold up in Leadville Colorado and a shooting incident.
Tacoma April 8 Burglar D Emory sentenced to ten years at Walla Walla penitentiary has been recognized as Peter Perley Lowe son of former Iowa governor Lowe by ex Chief Hoge Emory from Keokuk has a long record including San Quentin Oregon and Walla Walla exploits and once followed McKinley’s train to California with a notable haul of $800 from Admiral Melville’s hotel room Lowe and Hoge were school mates at Ames College and Lowe later earned a degree from Oberlin around 1874
The Methodist church filled last evening for Evangelist Shawhan and singer Elderkin. Shawhan spoke on Skeletons and Sore Spots and Forgetting the Things That Are Past while Elderkin led a half hour song service. An altar service followed and more gatherings are set for 3 PM and 7 30 PM with further meetings promised this week.
Austin April 8 The Chicago Rock Island and Texas railroad extends to the gulf coast with a 295 mile route from Fort Worth to Galveston via Dallas Corsicana Center ville Madisonville Houston and through several counties. The line aims for 80 pound steel and strong ballast to create a premiere Texas route at about 35000 per mile with completion within a year.
The Home Tea Co. at 110 E. Second St. signals a solicitor will call within a day or two with specials for the opening week.

The Muscatine Commercial club met in the reading room on West Second Street with small attendance. Mr. Gray was elected a member, one new membership application passed first reading, and Dr. H Johnson Dean reported the bowling rules committee had not yet met. The motion passed to have the committee present a full rules and regulations set at the next regular meeting.
Cloudy skies persist with warmer temperatures. Iowa shows partly cloudy conditions tonight and Wednesday with possible light showers in the west. Chicago area forecast calls for warming trend and unsettled spells.
Brick is hauled for new Keystone Button Co plant at Fifth and Cypress with a three story 40 by 140 building ready by July. Keystone plans merge South Muscatine and Mulberry plants boosting workers to about 300 and add finishing. Pearl Specialty Co to make pearl goods in a 40 by 80 one story frame building, Barry Mfg Co to expand with a brick foundry and machine shop on Mulberry Street.
The Rev. A. A. Kendrick D D LL D dean of Shurtleff College School of Divinity collapsed and died at his College Avenue home Upper Alton from heart disease induced by a stroke of apoplexy.
Paris April 8 The Presse announced a match race between W K Vanderbilt Jr and Dr Henri de Rothschild using forty horsepower cars of the same make. The race will be run before May 15 for a stake of a thousand francs donated to the poor. Distance is 220 kilometers and the route is to be announced.
