Livestock Trends and U.S. Cattle and Hog Production This Year
The bulletin notes beef cattle in the United States total 66 million, 2 million below the prior census, with Western states bearing the main decline. California leads Pacific Coast hog production but hog numbers have fallen since 1920. Rising grain prices and lower yields offset by higher livestock income, and a shift of hog production westward are highlighted, alongside overall farm finance trends and the role of diversified livestock on farms. Domestic per capita meat consumption rose in 1926, while hog receipts at public markets declined since 1925. corn shortages in 1924 reduced hog slaughter, though volumes may rebound as prices improve.
