A gas explosion at a Cumberland coal mine in Hill Spring Nova Scotia on February 24 traps 113 miners. Bodies recovered by morning with many mutilated and others wounded. mayor appeals for widows and orphans aid as rescue continues.
Halifax Nova Scotia issues a public appeal for relief funds after a Spring Hill mining disaster. About 117 dead and 51 widows with 157 orphans. relief target set at seventy thousand dollars. Committee including mayor, town council and clergy to collect subscriptions. First donation of 300 dollars came from J W Clenden president of Acadia Coal in New York. Public funeral planned for Tuesday afternoon.
Salt River Valley experienced record flooding with rains spreading across the region. Salt River rose seventeen feet above normal near Phoenix, flooding farms and rail lines, submerging the electric works, and destroying adobe homes. Estimated losses reach about 125000 dollars. Five Pima Indians are confirmed drowned with a reported white family lost north of Phoenix.
A ship named Elizabeth with Captain Colcord and seventeen sailors perished near Tennessee Cove four miles north of Marin harbor after gale winds drove the vessel toward rocks. The tug Monarch offered aid but was refused over charges. Anchor hawser later broke, a second hawser failed, and the ship struck the rocks.

In Cincinnati on February 24 a Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern east-bound express collided with the rear coach of a west-bound local at Remington station. Conductor Gallagher suffered serious injuries. several passengers including Mrs. Retta Clayton of Fayetteville and Mary Fox of St. Martins were hurt but none fatally. The injured were brought to Cincinnati for care.
Heavy snow and subsequent rain flooded the Missouri river near Kansas City. A German fisherman Frederick Warner and his wife and three children were drowned when their home on the riverbank collapsed into the flood.
The schooner James H. Gordon, which sailed from Bridgeton New Jersey on January 13 bound for Jacksonville Florida, has been given up for lost and it is feared that the nine crewmen have perished.
Dr W E Moore secretary of the Presbyterian general assembly's revision committee spoke on the group' s work in Washington City amid talks to draft two new chapters. The committee will not publish its findings but asks presbyteries to review the report and submit amendments by Dec 1 1891 for a final 1892 assembly report.
In Rochester New York on February 24 Louisa Kauffmann, 14, fell through ice while skating near canal. Two boys, Robert Thompson and Richard Redmond, witnessed the accident. Thompson jumped in to help but both he and Louisa sank under the ice twice before Redmond threw his coat sleeve to Thompson, aiding the rescue and the girl reached the ice.
In rural Rio Arriba County on February 24 Seth V. Russell was killed when an unknown shooter opened fire on him and J. W. Cook as they rode between the Lee and Armstrong ranches. Cook, who fired at two Mexicans he saw fleeing, believes he struck one. The Maxwell Grant company plans to use bloodhounds from Trinidad to track the killers.
Isaac Cox, a recently discharged regular Army soldier, planned to travel to Oregon with about 800 in cash. He showed the roll in a Jersey City saloon before boarding a Baltimore and Ohio train. John Morey robbed him, was later arrested, and $500 was recovered.
In Sativa Colorado Patrick Sullivan was shot by Oliver Riley at 7 pm Saturday. He died at 8 pm triggering a mob that attacked the jail. Riley was shot by the crowd and hanged at the railroad crossing while Sullivan had been interfering with coal taken from the railroad route.

W F Kershaw, cashier at the McDonald over all factory in St Joseph Missouri, was knocked down by two men as he approached the factory on Saturday and robbed of 2500 dollars he had drawn from a bank to pay the employer. The robbers fled across the river into Kansas.

Jeainsville Pa February 24 The exploring party in Jeansville mine found the bodies of James Griffith Bernhardt McCloskey and a Hungarian laborer near the entrance to the east gangway Monday morning.

W J Elliott shoots at Al Osborne, who is killed. bystanders include a late asylum steward shot in the eye and several others wounded. Elliott and his brother surrender to police.
Annapolis reports William J. Handran a marine at the naval academy hanged himself with a chain in his cell after being locked up for drunkenness. He had reportedly never before touched liquor and had said no court martial the next day. The death followed a failed trip to Philadelphia and his discovery Sunday morning.
