Eighteen miners perish when flooding fills No 1 slope at Jeansville J C Hayden Co. two escapees recount the panic as water gushed from the old flooded slope. Pumps race to vent water while families wait for news.
A Newcastle report says Monday night’s explosion at the Grand River Mine near Fre Denver Colorado did not kill anyone. By Wednesday the mine was sealed and officials expect the fire to smother within weeks with small losses.
SHAMOKEN Pa Feb 6 A miner John Duce man was killed and two Hungarian miners were badly hurt in a powder explosion at Neileon colliery on Wednesday. They are not expected to survive.
A Canadian Pacific through sleeping car derailed near Schriber on the Lake Superior section, the car crossing a bridge and falling fifty to sixty feet. Eleven passengers were injured, four seriously. most escaped in the dining car. A surgeon arrived soon after, and all cars were being cared for the injured.
Himer Clark, superintendent of the Kansas City Gable Railroad, was killed in an accident at the Woodward Avenue power house when struck by a grip-car. He was a prominent city official.

A blaze at Hagelow and Bernstein stable behind 185 and 187 Hanover Street destroyed sixty five horses four herdica and large stores of hay and grain. The total loss is estimated between $20 000 and $80 000 with rumors of incendiary cause.
A fire at the Millerville poor house in Maine early Thursday killed an 18 year old female inmate while thirteen others escaped. The blaze started from a defective chimney and caused extensive damage to the facility.
A Michigan salt manufacturers meeting in East Saginaw on February 6 debated the expiration of the Michigan Salt association on March 31 1891 and favored reorganizing the group under new terms. A resolution required 95 percent of state manufacturers to join the reorganized association.
James Carroll, a West Virginia county road surveyor, asked Dr. James A. Cox to draft a resignation petition. Cox drew a petition demanding Carroll be hanged, and about 250 illiterate signatories joined without reading it before the rest realized the hoax.
George Bricka, living behind his Halsted and Rees street saloon, killed himself with a pistol after failing to fix a faulty beer pump. He had argued with the pump’s malfunction for days, then went to a back bedroom, shot himself in the temple while his wife remained at the bar.
Monday night a mob of masked men seized John Moore a Black man near Bluff Mo and hanged him to a tree limb tying a rope around his neck. After torturing him for a confession he was released when he could not identify any of the mob.
British steamship Circe sank at Locust Point Baltimore while docked. Crew awoke to rushing water from a presumed engine room leak. The partly loaded vessel was bound for Glasgow and loss estimated at about 80000 dollars.
Director General Davis of the World’s Columbian Exposition announces key appointees for Chicago event. Chief of electrical department is Professor John B. Barrett, for fish and fisheries Capt. J. W. Collins of the U S Fish Commission, and for ethnology and archaeology Professor Putnam of Harvard College.
Fort Worts Texas February 6 President Imboden of the New England Loan and Savings bank was indicted again on two more forgery charges. He was admitted to bail. The total forgeries and embezzlement now charged against him amounts to fifty thousand dollars.
Springfield Feb 6 Republicans and F M B A members abstained from voting for senator at the joint assembly as Cockrell was absent from the Illinois legislature.

United Press agent drew attention to a claimed interview with Sir Julien Pauncefote in The London Times about the supreme court decision. Pauncefote stated he had given no interview on the subject and expressed surprise and indignation.
Washington City February 6 The case against Owensby for alleged securing of money by false pretenses was nolled by the prosecution. Owensby left for Chicago and said he planned to sue the district for damages over false imprisonment.
The House set a daily 11 o clock morning session for the rest of the term. In the Senate, the pension appropriation bill was taken up and passed after several amendments were adopted.
Col. Clements paid out the largest single pension in the division to Mrs. Laura B Whitney widow of Col Samuel B Whitney of the Seventh Illinois volunteers. She received $9,826.40 and is entitled to $80 monthly from the Treasury. Only Mrs Abraham Lincoln had a larger payment but by special congressional act, not pension law.
Robert Robinson’s home burned last week in a manner suggesting incendiarism. The insurer offers a reward for arrest of the arsonists. Robinson received a letter signed White Caps ordering him to leave town within eight days or face whipping tar and feathering.

Lawrence Kansas dispatch reports Charles H Branscombe died in Denver Colorado Monday night after a brief illness from pneumonia. Branscombe helped plot Lawrence's site for the New England Emigrant Aid Society thirty seven years ago and played a key role in early Kansas politics. He was the Prohibition candidate for governor four years ago.

Democrats in the Indiana House introduced a bill to appoint benevolent penal and reform boards by the governor with one year terms and nonpartisan membership. The governor would head all institutions and boards could be removed at will. The White Cap flogging bill allows retaliation suits against counties. A salary bill fixes governor at 5000, secretary, auditor, treasurer at 8000, attorney general 3500, Supreme Court clerk 3000, and superintendent 2500 with deputies 600 to 1200.
Indianapolis February 6 James Eads confined for laziness was found digging out of the jail early Wednesday using an iron bar and a broken stone near a sewer. Turnkey Emmett halted the escape and Eads is now in shackles in a dungeon. Also in Indianapolis, Leland J. Webb of Topeka Kansas ordered a court martial set for February 24 to try Walter S. Payne former Ohio Prohibition secretary of state candidate and ex commander in chief of the Sons of Veterans for misappropriating money and property.

Thomas B. Woodside a wealthy farmer in New Burnarogs Indiana shot himself in the presence of Stella Fisher, his fiancée and daughter of State's Attorney H A Fisher. Stella says Woodside sought to ruin her. In Greencastle Indiana a house ten miles west burned to the ground killing 80 year old Robert Bond who was cremated inside.
A flock of twenty one geese owned by Asher Werts died after a night frost left their pond ice solid in Crawfordsville Indiana. The birds were found lying dead on the surface Wednesday morning.
Samuel Campbell of Monroe City, reported missing, was located in Abilene Kansas. Relatives believe he is insane. May Murphy age eight of Martinsville died from burns Tuesday. New Albany church to be enlarged at cost 815,000 and YMCA plans a new hall costing 80600 this season.
