Washington and Baltimore social plans for a Washington banquet fall apart as Senator Gorman declines to attend. The event, meant to feature southern elites and eight Republican senators, was seen as politically risky and deemed improper by Gorman who urged leaders to avoid a partisan spectacle.
Washington February 5 Republicans plan a Thursday conference to settle the senate’s order of business for the next two to three weeks. The eight hour labor bill and the international copyright bill remain the main items, with a likely list including the bankruptcy bill Nicaragua canal bill the pure food bill the revenue marine transfer and private claims court bills.
An estimate to Congress from the secretary of war proposes about 2 million dollars to cover the quartermasters department for the just-ended Indian campaign. The main items include 935,016 for troop and supply transport and 187,702 for clothing and camp gear, plus 70,000 for horses and ponies and 87,000 for price differences between field and post supplies. The total may reach 2,000,000, with funds intended to fulfill a 60,000 annual Sioux treaty appropriation for twenty years.
The Washington house discusses the Barrundia affair with McCreary and others backing Secretary Blaine for recalling Mizner. Dalszell criticizes the navy’s actions and Reiter reprimand. A Kansas City Post-Dispatch report notes gun stores selling 5000 boxes of 45 caliber cartridges amid plans by Maj Charles MacNamara ex Fenian officer Capt Charles Waters and Capt Thomas Phelan to raise troops for Guatemala. MacNamara cites New York orders and mentions Maj M Bell Barrundia secretary. The trio formed a military triangle ready to mobilize, but the Guatemalan rebellion’s end halted the scheme.
Boston reports a St Louis dispatch claiming a law could end the Bell telephone patent on December 9 1840 but Bell officials dispute the Verge claim. Thomas D. Lockwood says the statute does not apply to Bell and that the U S patent expires March 7 1898 for the first patent and January 30 1894 for the second patent.
In Boston on February 5 authorities report the rubber industry trust formed a month earlier has failed. Prices have sunk to new lows with several major houses cutting rates and boasting further declines. A fierce price war appears imminent as crude rubber costs at Para rise, unsettling manufacturers and dealers.
The St James Gazette denounces Sir Julien Pauncefote for discussing the Behring sea question with reporters and sending it to the U S supreme court. It likens the indiscretion to Lord Sackville's dismissal and says diplomats should stay silent or stay home.
The coke operators and miners met in Scorr Township, Pennsylvania, on February 5 but failed to settle wage terms. Operators demand a 10 percent cut while miners push for an advance. After refusing proposals, miners were ordered to quit next Saturday for an indefinite time, signaling a looming general strike.
In St Paul Minn on February 5 the jury fixed William W Bishop’s damages at 15000 for injuries from the Selby avenue hill cable disaster of January 2 1888. The verdict was sealed and opened by Judge Kelly the next morning. Bishop suffered a head blow leading to paralysis seven months later.
Oklahoma City reports Tuesday elections for full county offices. Oklahoma and adjacent counties show strong party splits with Canadian and Cleveland leaning Democratic. Payne County aligns with the Alliance while other counties likely back Republicans by slim margins.
Wichita dispatch reports a man named Harper, being moved from Dodge City to Cowley county on burglary and intent to kill charges, leapt from a southbound Santa Fe train near Valley Creek and was killed.
Troy, February 5 Postmaster James a Ashley died at his home Tuesday night from epilepsy. The postmaster was a well known G A R figure in New York and an active member of the organization.

A Grand River mine explosion near Newcastle Colorado sent hundreds fleeing as coal piles burn miles away. The fire lights Leadville and Denver skies while railroads shuttle evacuees and residents seek safer climes amid immense flames and heat.
A rear end collision on the Cleveland Lorain and Wheeling line at Beach City killed C W Lainman fireman in the forward train’s caboose and badly burned John McConnell brakeman of Lorain who is expected to die. Two tramps in the caboose were injured as the engine left the track and the car was demolished. Lainman, of Belden, was on his first trip.
Patrick Ryan a Lafayette farmer was found dead on the Pickard quarry rocks after his wagon and horses plunged from a high ledge. The horses were alive and struggling to free themselves, while Ryan's head showed injuries from the fall and hoofs.
In Rusk region small-pox spreads prompting school and church closures and a strict quarantine. Vaccination refusal carries a $100 fine. Overton reports thirteen new cases while Smith County offers $10 per day for nurses to care for patients.
About 10 o'clock Wednesday morning water broke into No 8 slope at Janesville and seventeen men were drowned. Their names have not yet been ascertained owing to the great excitement.
Wilkesbarre reports a sensational elopement as Lawrence Bilby age 19 and Lizze Hartman age 17 ride away on horseback after Bilby vaults from his father fashionable home. Parents oppose union due to youth and Bilby retrieves the girl by signaling to her through a second floor window with a blanket line.
Louisvitle police report that fire department member Ed Claytor and Jack Delaney fought in a saloon at Highth and Green Streets. Claytor fired twice at Delaney but hit Officer John Burke in the abdomen, fatally wounding him. Claytor was arrested and says the fatal shot was meant for Delaney.
In Washington on February 5, Owenby was arrested on a warrant for obtaining money under false pretenses after a dishonored $17 Hanover Bank check. He claimed he would pay once mileage and witness fees were received, but remained in custody of the district government.
In Lincoln Nebraska the house and senate adopt a resolution by Wilson of Webster county Alliance member declaring that Congress passage of the Conger compound lard bill would harm Nebraskas sixteen hundred thousand cattle worth at least three million dollars and accuse pork packers of using paid canvassers in the west. The Populists endorse the Paddock pure food bill.
In London on February 5 Mr Gladstone moved to second read a bill removing religious disability. Supported by Liberals he called the disability an anomaly and injustice. Government leader Smith moved to suspend for six months. Gladstone’s motion failed 256 to 223.
Kansas City Missouri February 5 The citizens committee finished the inquiry into the American National bank failure and sent circulars to stockholders calling a February 17 meeting. They plan to resume business and favor reopening the bank with capital reduced from 1,250,000 to 1,000,000.
In Lima Ohio on February 5 Dr Henry Sampel a Bloomville druggist calmly arranged his affairs and died at 1 11 pm. He felt he would die that day without pain and denied taking poison though some suspected it. No poisoning symptoms were observed.
At Arkansas City Kansas on February 5 professor Coppeck received a message from Indian Commissioner Morgan confirming plans to eject intruders from the Cherokees outlet. A large military detachment is ordered to reoccupy the strip and keep all boomers out.
The first Creek per capita payment tragedy occurred twenty miles west of Muskogee at noon Tuesday. Government Agent Miller and Mr Ipsley, escorted by eighteen guards, carried the second $100,000 funds to the site. A quarrel between Governor McIntosh and Officer Bob Marshall led to McIntosh being shot dead.
Detroit February 5 Ryan Bros proprietors of the Home Knitting works filed mortgages totaling 40000 to secure creditors. Other unsecured debts exist. Assets exceed liabilities. Causes include heavy losses on customers strong competition and a bad season's trade.

The body of Miss Hattie Colton of Albany Wisconsin arrived home from Battle Creek Michigan where she sought treatment for consumption with Dr Kochs lymph. The remedy, pursued after a long illness, is reported to have hastened her death Sunday afternoon.
In the Reichstag Von Caprivi warned the coming year would be trying for the colony. He said it was desirable to await the expiration of the experimental period before abandoning the colony, a move that would embarrass and annoy the government.
Merpapolis Illinois reports a Tuesday fire leveled I. N. Mc Clure’s general store and two warehouses with a 25000 dollar loss and 19000 dollar insurance. A later Springfield ballot update notes Cockrell of Alliance missed votes in a joint session where Palmer led with 101 ballots.
Charles H. Chapman sues C. S. Osborn postmaster and editor of The News for 5000 damages over publication of a recorded bill in chancery without comments. Osborn furnished bond.
London reports the United States supreme court will issue a decision on the seal fishery case. The London Post says regardless of the final ruling both Englishmen and Canadians will acknowledge the tribunal’s integrity.
Fire swept the east side of the square in Greenville eighteen miles east of here at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning destroying all the business houses. Estimated loss about 25000 dollars with insurance unknown. Also notes Crispi’s resignation not yet accepted as of February 6 in Rome.
The Indiana House passes a native cattle meat purchase bill and rejects a sixty lash bare back punishment for wife whipping by 45 to 43. The Anti Gas Pump Bill faces opposition in the Senate and may be revived as gas territory disputes grow. A Terre Haute and Indianapolis Rail Road tax dispute seeks $2,000,000 owed to the state. A town school board bill is defeated in the Senate. Two Indians killed by Redskins are noted in a brief item. An escape at a fire is reported in Nar row. Woods is sentenced.
In Jennings County Nebraska a general store caught fire during Sunday services. As bystanders rushed to aid a violent blast toppled by ten barrels of coal oil and 250 pounds of powder shattering goods and sending debris skyward. No serious injuries reported as the blast was heard five miles away.
Private dispatches report Henry W. McNamer and his son John killed near Spokane Falls Washington after a dispute with an Indian encampment. The son killed a squaw during the row and both men were slain in the ensuing fight the father a former Clay County teacher. The son was 24 and both were well regarded. Railway conductors discuss moving the national headquarters to Indianapolis with state and local officials and allies.
In Shelbyville Indiana hydrophobia fears rise as cattle hogs are killed after dog bites. James Reinhardt reports several large hogs and fat cattle killed amid farmer outrage over unflined dog control. In Indianapolis the Farmer's Alliance executive committee discusses cross state purchasing agencies and possible multi state union. Evansville man Bradford Burbank dies aged 71 after pioneering work on Fluor Spar mines. Edward M McFall of Hammond arrested for embezzling funds from American Express at Lett's Corner. Rev John W Wilson to lead Mayflower Congregational Church in Indianapolis.

It warns against substitutes and offers procurement through any reliable druggist.

White River Jersey Cattle Co Munice Indiana advertises livestock including OCicero's Tormentor 20,228 a son of Old Tormentor. It lists cows and heifers with prices from 155 to 250 dollars and notes six head total 1225 dollars. Next Jersey public sale set for the third Tuesday in May 1891.
The notice promotes the Muncie Commercial and Social Club and lists numerous real estate bargains in Muncie. It details houses with 5 to 9 rooms on various lots, prices ranging from 1500 to 3000, cash and monthly terms, plus 46 new houses and 40 rental properties. Properties feature gas heat and spring water.
