Everett Kuykendall of Mt. Vernon died this afternoon at a St. Louis hospital. The body will be transported to Pulley Funeral Home for arrangements.
Louis G. Mescher of Metropolis died Thursday at 74. He is the father of George Mescher of Mount Vernon. Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ in Metropolis. The body lies in state at Milter Funeral Home. Survived by wife, seven other children, 15 grandchildren, two brothers, and a sister.
Arthur L Laur aged 68 of Granite City former Mt. Vernon resident died last night in a St. Louis hospital. He was vice president of Mercantile Mortgage Co. at Granite City, a Presbyterian elder, and survived by his wife Wilmoth Boswell two daughters Alberta Paoli and Margaret Ellen Whaley six grandchildren and one great grandchild plus four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held in Granite City with arrangements incomplete. He was born June 29 1899 in Jefferson County to Joseph and Mary E Bain Laur.
New York teachers resume classes as AFL-CIO United Federation of Teachers members vote over 5 to 1 to accept a new 135 million dollar contract with the Board of Education ending a 14 day strike that halted public schooling for 11 million students. City officials estimate lost state aid at 10 to 12 million dollars, while 18 million dollars in salaries were not paid during the walkout.
A group from the Mt. Vernon Pilots Association plans a Sunday flight to Kentucky Lake on October 15. It will be the first group flight of the year after a weather cancellations. Activities include golfing boating and other recreation at the lake. The flight departs at 9:00 a.m.

Wall Street fell slightly in early trading as the Dow Jones industrial average slipped 2.20 to 927.18 and the Associated Press 60-stock average rose 0.2 to 339.2. Gains in Amperinol and other names contrasted with losses in Du Pont, Eastman Kodak, General Motors, and Boeing.

Weather outlook for Southern Illinois shows average temperatures about two to five degrees below normal from Saturday to next Wednesday. Normal highs reach the mid to upper 70s with lows in the 50s. Expect little or no precipitation and minor daily changes.
A warming trend developed in southern Illinois as a chilly night left the northwest with light freezes. Temperatures were forecast to hit the 60s in southern counties this afternoon, with northern Illinois awaiting a Saturday rebound. Readings reached 60 in Belleville. rain prospects remain minimal except around Chicago where sprinkles were reported.
In Carbondale Illinois AP report, W H Pick manager of a Carbondale food market seeks a man who left his coat behind after stealing merchandise. The suspect allegedly kicked a glass door, Pick grabbed him, and the man slipped out of the coat and escaped.
Four people appeared in Chretur Court at Mt Vernon with three traffic related charges and one intoxication case. William LeRoy Gerner of Cabot received a fine for lack of valid reciprocity registration. Sharon L. Marlow of Route 7 Mt Vernon was fined for speeding. James R. Robinson of 1101 21st Street was fined for careless driving. Glenn Jackson Johnson of McLeansboro was fined for intoxication with a $40 penalty. In other news the Chamber’s tug of war event ended with retailers as winners amid playful heckling and no injuries.

Woodstock Community High School faced a teachers strike by Local 1642 of the American Federation of Teachers. Twenty three members picketed entrances as substitute teachers filled classrooms while attendance was not yet tallied. students were warned absences could be disciplined. Enrollment at the time stood at 1,037.
