Markets report hog prices with No 1 and No 2 stalls for 200 to 230 lb hogs at 41.75 to 42.25, No 2 at 42.75, and No 1 and 3 at 200 to 250 lb at 41.25 to 41.75. Sows range from 35.00 to 36.50 for 300 to 400 lb, 34.50 to 35.50 for 400 to 500 lb, and 34.50 to 36.50 for 500 to 600 lb.
Mt Vernon quotes show soybeans at 5.95, wheat 4.45, corn 2.20. Chicago market lists Wheat No 2 soft red 4.92, No 2 hard red 4.72, Corn No 2 yellow 2.57, Oats 1.39, Soybeans No 1 yellow 6.26. National Stockyards receipts expected Monday include 7,000 hogs, 3,000 cattle, 300 sheep with hogs slow to steady and sow prices easing.
New York stock market eased in early trading after seven straight advance days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened down slightly as decliners outweighed advancers, with Texaco, First National City and Beech Aircraft leading losses.

Mt. Vernon Township High School opened its 1973 Variety Show Now and Then with a wide range of acts. The cast directed by Charles Selase and hosted by Charles Bruce featured barbershop quartets turned rock group favorites, impressionists, bluegrass, and nostalgic numbers. Notable moments included Marrakesh Express, 4 and 20, Soul Makossa and the Dirty Dozen dance routine. The show showcased strong sound and lighting, with praise for emceeing and musical accompaniment. Final performance scheduled for tonight at 8 pm with tickets at the door.
Governor Daniel Walker was sidelined by a low grade virus forcing cancellations of most activities on Thursday. Norton Kay said Walker would return to a normal schedule today after a brief appearance at a United Fund drive kickoff rally in the state capitol and an accountability session in Watseka was canceled.

Daily scrap shipments average one railcar, with two shifts in some departments. Other tour participants included Denzer Electric and local suppliers as area business recaps continued.
The state Department of Aeronautics approved a grant request by the Mt. Vernon Airport Authority for a fire station at Mt. Vernon Airport. The city will staff the station by training airport personnel, replacing the prior plan where city firemen would fill in during city calls.
Verte Neely staged the first mock disaster since the new wing opened. A hospital spokesman said minor bugs appeared but overall the drill was successful as responders practiced at the airport scene. A student victim fainted in makeup and was treated in the ER before returning home. The exercise aimed to expose flaws for correction before a real event.
A Texas International airliner carrying 11 people vanished Thursday night during a torrential storm over southwest Arkansas. Fog kept searchers on the ground early today as crews scoured the area. An Arkansas National Guard helicopter en route to help crashed, killing three crewmen, state police said. Ceiling under 300 feet limited flight activity. several planes operated for about two hours before storms halted air search.

Mrs Karen Bayer and Ralph Smith appointed to lead the Mt. Vernon Civic Division with a $1700 goal. Bayer, a Southern Illinois University graduate, and her husband David are parents of three daughters Trez, Ramelle, and Denae. They will coordinate donations and plan fund raising events.
The county highway workers strike persists after no decision on union recognition at last Monday's meeting. Picket lines formed at the courthouse and county highway department. A Monday night meeting remains unscheduled as Dean Frick notes no agenda yet. County Highway Sept Jack Trotter schedules talks with road commissioners of 16 townships to review remaining work and potential methods to complete it.
