Associated Press reports farmer Herbert Dillon of Salem New York fired at a buzzing fly with a 32 caliber revolver. The bullet hit Dillon in the left thigh and he was listed in good condition at home. The fly escaped.
Arkansas Gazette executive editor Harry S. Ashmore will become a personal assistant to Adlai E. Stevenson next month. He will help in preparations for the 1956 presidential campaign, though Stevenson has not decided on seeking the Democratic nomination. Ashmore will be on leave from the Little Rock paper and is known for involvement in race integration discussions.
Mr and Mrs Troy Lance of Waltonville welcomed Carmen Elaine born 2 44 am at Good Samaritan weighing seven pounds four ounces. James and Mrs Rapp of Bluford welcomed James Clyne born at 5 12 am at Good Samaritan weighing seven pounds one half ounce. Walter L Puffer and wife of 315 Broadway welcomed Roger Chris born 11 21 am at Good Samaritan weighing six pounds eight ounces. In Carlinville on Monday a car carrying six youths overturned on State Route 4 near the city outskirts. Paul Jackson 14 and Thomas King 17, both of Carlinville, were killed. Dean Triplett 15 and Robert Spencer 16 were in critical condition. driver Roland Davis 20 and Earl Gwillim 17 were injured. Police said the crash occurred while attempting to pass another vehicle outside city limits.
Forget-Me-Not Day in Mt. Vernon raised $441.82 collected by Gold Stripe Chapter No. 28 Disabled American Veterans. Commander Guy Ridgeway said proceeds from selling small flowers downtown will fund year round work aiding disabled veterans their widows and children.

In Las Vegas on a Monday aviation test, an F86 Sabre Jet was shot down by a high flying target. Lt. Col. Walter E. International Harvester announced the sale of its refrigeration division to Whirlpool-Seeger Corp. The deal includes the Evansville Indiana plant employing 3,900 workers and will close by March 31, 1956. Harvester will exit the refrigerator and home freezer business along with its air conditioning unit. John L. McCaffrey said plans for displaced employees will be announced later.
Evansville Indiana reports two more deaths from encephalitis in hospitals, raising recent toll to 10 in the tri state area. Victims include Mrs Mark K Janning 77 near Evansville and John William Gaban 79 from West Salem Illinois. Fort Branch sees 10 diagnosed cases and five deaths as total suspected cases reach 22. Doctor A L Marshall Jr of the Indiana Board of Health says the outbreak appears to have leveled off with mosquitoes blamed for transmission from infected animals.
S/Sgt. John Byrne of the Centria Air Force Recruiting Office announced the Air Force is seeking re enlistment of prior service technicians. The policy allows veterans with needed skills to reenlist in higher grades. Veterans may select assignments at U S bases or overseas theaters and may contact Sergeant Byrne at Mt. Vernon City Hall on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chester man Robert Blake, 20, of Red Bud pleaded innocent to manslaughter in the death of truck driver Russell Eaton, 27, of Cutler after a Sparta street fight on August 7. Bond set at $2000. trial date not set. Eaton died from a skull fracture hours after the clash sparked when Blake’s estranged wife left with Eaton.
A/3c Walter Wayne Stout, stationed at Scott Air Force Base near Belleville, arrived home for a 30 day convalescent leave with his mother Mrs. Rose Stout on Liberty Road. He has been in the base hospital for five weeks with a fractured right leg, injury occurring after he injured his leg while pushing a car out of a ditch during a weekend home visit.
LOS ANGELES a new land speed record of better than 21 miles a minute was set by an unmanned rocket sled at China Lake California. W D Drinkwater Navy scientist said the steel runners turned red hot as it reached 1280 miles per hour over a 4.1 mile course. Ten rocket motors drove the sled to peak velocity in two seconds. Previously the record was 1100 mph at Edwards Air Force Base California.
A Marion County grand jury returned a no true bill in the case of Louis Hemmer an 18 year old Holland Indiana truck driver charged with reckless homicide in the death of Claude Hargis 62 of Salem. The crash happened Sept 15 on U S 50 in Salem and Hemmer was released from County Jail into his parents custody.
New York The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis will seek 47.6 million dollars in its March of Dimes drive starting next January. For 1954 the foundation asked 75 million dollars, the highest goal ever set, and this year it reduced expectations to 64 million.
Foreign Minister Gaetano Martine instructed Italy’s Washington ambassador to donate $20,000 to the American Red Cross for flood relief in New England.
In Indiana near Lebanon on U S 52 three big trailer trucks collided early today. Charles A Wallace of Chicago 29 died after being struck by wreckage as he stopped to help a stalled truck. John Levi White 39 of Tampa Fla suffered severe injuries and burns and was taken to Witham Hospital. Vernon J Brumley 36 Indianapolis remained with his parked truck when White’s Dennis Freight Lines rig hit Brumley’s rig. Brumley was unhurt.
New York stores report price hikes on private label coffees by major chains. Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co raises Red Circle to 87 cents, Bokar to 89, and vacuum-pack A P to 95 cents, while 8 O Clock remains 79 cents. Safeway nudges Nob Hill to 87, Airway stays at 79. Roasters had earlier boosted wholesale prices by four cents amid rising green coffee costs.
In Aylesbury England Sir Winston Churchill declines a pub naming honor. Fans proposed Churchill Arms for a new tavern but Churchill wrote he would rather the brewers choose another name.
Associated Press reports that a one day wildcat strike by miners over changed schedules ended as workers returned to Truax-Tracr Pyramid Mine and United Electric Fidelity strip mine. Production resumed at 12:01 a.m. at the Pyramid Mine and 8 a.m. at the Fidelity strip mine after union concerns over earlier one hour shift changes.
Japan will dispatch a scientific team to the Antarctic late next year to join the International Geophysical Year observance in 1957. The Asahi will back the expedition. The team will undertake two visits, December 1956 to January 1957 and December 1957 to December 1958.
Cmdr Eugene Blandin of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces told the opening of the resources conference that a third world war would cost about four trillion dollars, about ten times the cost of the last war, with costs rising tenfold since the mid-19th century.
