Mt Vernon residents share weekend visits and travels across Illinois and Wisconsin. Notable gatherings include Mr. and Mrs. Morris Metje with Otto and family in Cairo, and many from Mt Vernon attending weddings and family events in Flora, Vandalia, and Mahomet. Local business trips, university trips, and a hospital update fill a busy social notice.
A safety day fire demonstration occurred at Edison school yard as part of a program for Southern Illinois farm cooperative service employees and local firemen. Ethyl Corporation and Illinois Farm Supply staff showed fire cause and control methods and extinguishers effectiveness, with planned safety actions for the coming year by Jefferson Service Company and affiliated groups.
Route 4 A parents welcomed a son born at 2 48 am at Jefferson Memorial Hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces named David Lester. A daughter Marsha Kay born at Good Samaritan Hospital to George James King and wife. Mr and Mrs Darvin Hershel Bayer of Route 3 welcomed a daughter born this morning at Good Samaritan. A daughter born yesterday at 9 am to Mr and Mrs Edward Allred of McGill Nevada weighing 7 pounds named Pamela Sue with mother formerly Miss Bonita Farmer.

Mrs. Arthur Ewers and Miss Phyllis Ann Kruger spent Saturday in St. Louis with her daughter. Mrs. E.G. Johnston and son Bob, and Mrs. Jack Barbie also spent Saturday in St. Louis.
Parrish sheriff Leon Vial said new evidence backs his claim that the mysterious whistle r who frightened Jacquelyn Catlow 18 paused bride-to-be is an inside hoax. Mrs Catlow disputed the claim as preparations proceed for her daughter and state trooper Herbert Belsom's wedding at Taft.
Parachutists dropped to start rescue for 16 U S airmen after a B 50 bomber crashed in Labrador wilderness. A U S Air Force team evacuated the men by helicopter to a lake for pickup by a Canadian amphibian plane. The crash site lay about 95 miles southwest of Goose Bay.
In Cairo TL on Sunday route three crash killed Edgar Roberts 55 of Brairie Du Rocher. Three others injured including Mrs Barbara Boyd 24 of Cairo with serious head injuries and a broken leg plus her daughter Patty Lee 20 months. Harold Vick 24 Eleco driver in second car suffered critical head injuries. The driver of a third car escaped injury by veering into a ditch.
John Robison of Gary Indiana stopped here yesterday en route to Dyersburg Tennessee. Mr and Mrs S E Carnahan of this city flew to Metropolis Illinois. Glenn Elson and Betty Manion of Mattoon Illinois flew here yesterday. Andy J Myers of Gaskill Supply Division St Louis flew here today to transact business. Robert J Tansing of Metropolis Illinois flew today to the local field. S E Carnahan flew to Effingham today. Mayor Forsyth Lory VanHorn Earl Outland and Kenneth Letzekorn of this city flew to Springfield today. Bob Fancher of this city flew today to Paducah Kentucky.
At Logan Street Baptist Church Youth Fellowship crowned the new king and queen of the organization crowned by the retiring queen Betty Morgan with Jim Lamberson and Ivanne Throgmorton as the king and queen. Attendants and escorts included Carol Oreccom panied Jean Ann Kro g morton Ruby Easley Wanda Carpenter Freddie Bertram Doris Jean Wilson Earnest Dale Standerfer Joy Gay Elmer Matthews Bonne Sue Dodd Janet Lamperson and other participants. The coronation scene featured a throne styled as a fluffy cloud with the theme Look for the Silver Lining.
The Westminster Society will convene Tuesday September 26 at 2 p m at the Presbyterian church. Nursery care is provided for attendees children. Hostesses include Mrs. Gilbert Wood and others, with Mrs. Walter Merkelbach of Centrali a as guest speaker and special music by Mrs. Ted Hayes. Invites welcome new Mt. Vernon residents. fall and winter plans to be announced.
Descendants of Mathias and Rachel McPherson held their first family reunion at the city park yesterday with 86 registering. Attendees included 57 from Mt. Vernon and area, plus numerous relatives from East St. Louis Nash ville Polo Forreston Paducah and Washington DC among others, joined by Mr and Mrs John Hall of Los Angeles and Dan Zahn of Springfield.
The Mt Vernon Junior Women's Club held its annual membership tea Sunday Sept 24 at Bow Coffee House. Hosts included Mrs William Bailey and others with registration by Mrs John Grigg and Mrs Clarence Richardson. About 90 guests attended and the floral centerpiece was presented to club mother Mrs L G Severs.

A special slip cover lesson by the Woodlawn Unit of Home Bureau will be given at the home of Mrs. J J Jackson in Woodlawn on Wednesday Sept 27 at 10 am. Each attending should bring a covered dish for the noon luncheon and own table service.
The Newcomers Club Welcome Wagon held a bi monthly dinner at The Bow Coffee House with guests including husbands of members and new officers. Mrs. John W Edelman was welcomed as president, with officers announced. Special guests and new residents were noted, followed by bridge canasta and pinnochle games with various prize winners.
Lon McAllister, star of Home in Indiana, enjoyed a late night sandwich at Barbecue Haven in Mt. Vernon after nine. He had been sailboating in the east and was heading back to California. With his press agent, he drove a tiny right hand drive foreign convertible and asked Tony McKenzie for directions to St. Louis.
Millie Jane Cunningham 86 resident of Berry township Wayne County died at home at 1205 am Sunday Funeral services were to be held today at 2 pm at Bailey church north of Wayne City with burial in the nearby cemetery Rev Jesse Miller to conduct the services She is survived by her husband Floyd Cunningham

Peoria, Sept 25 A coroner and autopsy found 15 year old Mrs Dorothy Porter died from barbiturate poisoning after a beer party Friday night. Police closed the 7038 Club tavern where the gathering occurred. Suspects include Leslie Montonye 24 charged with murder and James Boland 16 named in a drug possession warrant issued by Lt. Stanley Mitchell.
Funeral services for Rosa Lee Grant 71 were held at 1 30 p m at Myers Chapel with the Rev Ace Summers officiating. Burial followed in the I O C F cemetery at Pinckneyville. She died suddenly Friday night at the Mt Vernon city park while attending a family gathering.

Indiana Governor Henry Schricker disclosed that D. C. Stephenson, former Ku Klux Klan leader, disappeared after parole from Michigan City prison. Stephenson, released March 23, had been living in Cairo Illinois and working in an advertising agency. He left Aug. 30 with his belongings, prompting a nationwide alert with no present reward.
Oakley Brookman of RFD 7 and Anna Jean Meador of RED 3 Bluford obtained a marriage license from the county clerk. The couple plans a formal ceremony in Bluford with nearby families in attendance. The license was issued after standard state checks and verification of both parties’ consent.
