Deaths L. D. Johnson of Wayne City Dies at 84
Lorenzo Dow Johnson 84, longtime Wayne City insurance agent and lifelong resident, died at 9 am Wednesday at his son Burrell Johnson’s home. Born March 15, 187? in Wayne County to Hiram B. and Matilda Feather Johnson, he married Sarah Jane Cates who died in 1949. A member of Hopewell Methodist Church and Past Master of Orel Lodge No. 759 AF and AM. Funeral Friday at 2 pm at Hopewell Church, Rev. L. E. Able officiating. Burial in Hopewell Cemetery. Body in state at Richardson Chapel until funeral hour. Surviving: son Burrell, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.

Elephant Returns After 11 Days in Mecklenburg Woods
Vicki the six year old Indian elephant wandered from her Charlotte area home on September 11 and was tracked by a volunteer posse. Police chief Joe Whitley supervised the roundup as off duty officers and volunteers formed a rope enclosure. Jack Partlow the owner and trainer Smoky Strickland helped guide the animal back to the amusement park.

Three Indicted Men Plead Guilty In Circuit Court
Three defendants indicted by the grand jury pleaded guilty before Judge B. W. Eovaldi. Jerry Reese age 19 admitted larceny of a car and received one to two years in prison with no probation. Robert L. Stewart 18 and Billey Ray Tolley 20 pleaded guilty to burglary at Green Hills Country Club and were placed on two years probation with four and five months at Vandalia respectively. White’s probation was modified to five months at Vandalia after a petition to revoke. Arraignments for Kernodle, Edwards, and Casey were postponed or not set. Kernodle seeks to suppress a confession alleging coercion, Edwards is charged with statutory rape, and Casey with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Rural firemen yesterday controlled two field fires and rubbish fires before they could cause damage. The first blaze endangered the old county barn property on George street.
