Relief Cut in Four Townships of Franklin County

The Public Aid Commission will hand relief administration back to local authorities in Franklin county under state supervision. An investigation cut more than half the names from relief rolls in Tyrone, Buring, Benton, and Denning townships. Families on relief dropped from 1,241 to 756. August expenditures fell to 43,061 dollars, a 26,696 dollar decline since October.

John Kittle of Wayne City Dies

John Kittle, 74, died at 8:00 a.m. at his Wayne City home after more than 40 years in the town. Funeral services were tentatively set for 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Combs Chapel. He is survived by his wife Belle, three sons Everett Earl and Glen, two daughters Nora Keller and Blanche Overby, a stepson Elmer Stroud, four brothers and three sisters, plus 15 grandchildren.

James C. Downey 75 died yesterday morning in Jerseyville Illinois. He is survived by his son Herbert G Downey manager of the Tri County Electric Cooperative of 418 South 20th Street and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 00 p m in Jerseyville.

Grand Jury Set To Convene At Court House Monday

A grand jury will convene at the court house here Monday to deliberate on several criminal cases. The sheriff's force is busy serving subpoenas for grand jurors and witnesses who will appear before the jury. The panel is expected to complete its work late Monday.

William H. Burns Dies at 86 in Woodlawn

William H. Burns 86 died at his son Claude’s home north of Woodlawn at 5 a m. He was born in Ohio, a retired farmer and carpenter, and a Presbyterian. Surviving: five sons Claude, Toney, Marshall, Sam, William. six daughters Grace Hopper, Maude McDaniels, Winnie Spangler, Nina Simmons, Bessie Procter, Shirley Komcek. 25 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild. Funeral Sunday at 2 p m from Osborn Funeral Home in Dix led by Rev. Austin Donoho. Body lies in state after noon Saturday.

Rubbish Fire Controlled by Mt Vernon Firecrews

A rubbish fire whipped by high winds at 7:00 last night prompted Mt. Vernon firefighters to respond to Jax Coal and Materials Co at 18th and Water Works Road. Fire crews reported gusts spread the blaze but no damage was reported.

Scheller Couple Visit Son Wounded in Korea Return

Pfc. Ray D. Harmon of Scheller was wounded in Korea on August 12 and recuperates at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver. His parents, Frank Harmon, Arthur Lance, and William Harmon, visited him, describing his injuries and remarkable survival. He crawled a mile to a first aid station after being hit and spoke of faith and awe at being alive. The reunion marked his first contact with family in almost a year.

Wm. L. Bullock Dies at 79. funeral Sunday

William Lester Bullock of RFD 8 Mr. Vernon died at 6:00 am at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital after five days as a patient. The Shiloh township farmer was 79 years old and will be buried in West Salem cemetery after a Sunday service at Myers Chapel conducted by Rev. E. Milby. He was born August 14, 1871, married Minnie Thomas in 1894, and is survived by his wife, three sons Verner David and Tommy of Mt. Vernon, two daughters Iva Dixon of Mt. Vernon and Gussie King of Minooka, a sister Elsie Martin of New Lenox, 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
