Romanians Seek Oil Equipment Blocked by U S

The United States government refused a Romanian request for 9.5 million dollars worth of American oil equipment. Officials said the State Department blocked the order several weeks ago. Romania's oil output is pledged to nations within the Soviet bloc.

State Bank Call Issued for Bank Condition Reports

State Auditor Arthur C. Lueder today issued a call to all state banks for a report of condition as of September 20. The Associated Press report out of Springfield Illinois notes the broad request across the banking system for financial health data.

1881 Drawing Shows Every Building in Old Mt Vernon

Jefferson County Histor ical Society displayed a 1881 lithograph showing all Mt Vernon buildings before the 1888 cyclone. The exhibit included Carter Wilkey’s 1872 Pioneer Association signature, a 1876 court house photo, and photos of early Mt Vernon deeds. Water bonds authorized for Mt Vernon in Illinois

The Illinois Commerce Commission authorized Illinois Cities Water Company to issue 1 550 000 in bonds to support its Mt Vernon water system. The commission also granted Southwestern Bell permission to extend mobile service areas to connect with land radiotelephone stations and related networks. A Rosiclare Telephone Company rate increase petition was set for hearing October 19 in Springfield.

Burrell Sledge Dies at Age 82 in Farrington Township

Burrell Robert Sledge a retired farmer died at 1 30 am at his home in Farrington township two days after his 82nd birthday He was a lifelong Jefferson county resident born September 20 1866 He married Minnie Wilkerson January 5 1888 and survives with six sons Raymond William John Roy David Harry two daughters Elizabeth Woodsides Grace Smith two brothers Hardy and Charles 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren Funeral arrangements were incomplete today

Rule Comic Book Murder Is Unfunny

Los Angeles county supervisors adopted an ordinance banning comic books dealing with murder burglary kidnapping arson and assault with death weapons. Violators face a 300 fine and six months in jail. County counsel Harold Kennedy explained the measure aims to prohibit sale of such magazines to children.

Charges Filed Here After Raid

Joe K. Murray faces charges of keeping gambling devices illegal sale of alcoholic liquor and selling liquor on Sunday after a raid on a gravel road house east of Pleasant Grove school four miles northeast of Mt. Vernon Deputy Dalby and Special Deputy Johnson seized a slot machine a bottle of whiskey and a bottle of gin Murray is accused of serving about 20 customers at the time of the raid.

Two as Detroit Robbers Identified in Harrisburg

Harrisburg II September 22 Two men charged with trying to hold up a Detroit tavern last Friday were identified by an off duty Detroit rookie policeman who drew his pistol and disrupted the robbery. The officer, Carlos Crawford 23, identified Albert Staponi 29 whom he wounded and Chester Lazenby 34. Detective Harold Thurkow of Detroit said the pair waived extradition and would be sent back when warrants arrive.
