Jefferson county's mines moved back to second in the state in coal production for August, mining 504,672 tons. Perry county led with 845,500 tons, while St. Clair county dropped to 496,891 tons. State total output reached 5,052,507 tons with 10,650 workers across 51 mines.

Harold Talbert, SIU senior of 1200 S 28th St, will join Mt. Vernon police as an intern policeman starting this Saturday.
