State Takes Over Famed Beall Woods
The Illinois Conservation Department expanded public lands by acquiring Beall Woods, a 626 acre virgin forest near Mount Carmel in Wabash County. Illinois paid 287,500 to James Bower of Evansville for the land, to be used as a public recreation and nature study area. The forest houses about 60 hardwood species, including shellbark hickories with three foot diameters and heights around 150 feet, among the nation’s largest. The Mt.
