Mt Vernon residents and visitors engage in business, travel, and family tasks across Missouri and nearby states. People from St Louis Ashley Dix Paducah and Biloxi travel for hospital visits, family matters, or educational plans while local officials and residents attend courts and reunions.
A pickup truck driven by Roscoe McCoy of 517 S 21st Street collided with an automobile driven by George W. Howard Sr of 315 N 14th Street. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Jefferson Memorial admits Mrs Ella Lowery and Mrs Jean Hall of Bonnie and Mrs Thelma Smothers. Discharged: infant Thelma Elizabeth Buck of Fairfield. Good Samaritan discharged: Anthony Pennington of Johnsonville, Viola York, Gus T Benson, Mrs Helen Charlotte Steffy and infant son James Phillip, Mrs Rosemary Hungate and infant daughter, Mrs Lillian Goodard and infant daughter.
Andrew D. Webb Chapter No. 160 will hold a stated meeting on Wednesday September 14 at 7 30 p m The Royal Arch degree will be conferred S Gale Bourland High Priest
The first dinner meeting of the club year for Society B and P W was held in the Egyptian room of Hotel Emmerson. Velma Ruth Pigg presented a program on Cancer with speakers Mrs W W Andrews and Dr C K Wells. Dr Wells spoke on a cancer clinic at Good Samaritan Hospital. A film Time Is Life was shown. The club voted to donate 25 to the polio drive and noted the $3,000 hospital pledge was paid in full.
Mr and Mrs C M Edmison quietly marked their 65th wedding anniversary on August 28 at 415 South 18th Street Mt Vernon where they have lived 26 years. They wed near Keenes in Wayne County by Rev W B Garner and later lived on a farm near Harmony church before moving to Mt Vernon. He retired from the grocery business about ten years ago. They are parents of J R Edmison of Mt Vernon and Ethel Frost of Kansas City and have three grandchildren and six great grandchildren all in Mt Vernon. Mrs Edmison is 82, daughter of the late Rev John Norman and Lydia Norman. Mr Edmison, 86, is son of the late William B Edmison and Mary Ann Edmison. They belong to Logan Street Baptist Church.
Mt Vernon Rotary Club met at Hotel Em merson with President Dave Furnall presiding. Virginia Sturm urged support for Mt Vernon Civic Music Association and Infantile Paralysis Foundation fund drives. Rev Bayne Wilson spoke on Looking Backward. Women’s Missionary Society meeting postponed to Sept 16. Anna Rogers Parr to review The Greatest Story Ever Told Sept 14 at Central Church of Christ.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Edwards of Burnt Prairie welcome a daughter Kathleen born Monday afternoon at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr and Mrs Floyd Bryan of Route 4 Vernon have a daughter Rita Marlene born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr and Mrs Nolan Phillips of Belle Rive announce a son born last night. Mr and Mrs Ray Hodges of Fairfield greet a son born this morning named Billy Max. Mr and Mrs Joseph Harold Fowler of Bonnie celebrate a son born this morning named Robert Byron. Twin daughters were born to Mr and Mrs Marvin W Morrison of 701 South 18th Street at 11 52 a m and 11 54 a m. they are unnamed.
More than 40 lodge members and families attended the annual fish fry and picnic at Ropers Landing on the Ohio River. Motor boating was the main activity and a watermelon feast closed the day at Dixon Springs State Park. Mr and Mrs John Childers and family of Fairfield, a visiting Rebekah, were guests.
Mt. Vernon firemen answered three alarms last night for minor blazes. A 10 a.m. call to the 1100 block of Conger followed a storm knocking out a electric service wire. At 12:13 a.m. a jeep fire occurred on N. 7th street. A 12:30 a.m. alarm was set for Henry Richards's basement fire at 713 8 22nd.
Rev. T. H. Dorris resigns from North Benton Baptist Church Benton M and will assume duties as pastor of Mt. Vernon Second Baptist Church starting October 1. Associated Press report notes a transition in the Benton area church leadership.
Airport News lists Vana Mowyer from Metropolis flying home after a few days in this city. Homer George of St. Louis returns home following a visit to relatives in Mt. Vernon. Dr. O S Patso from Kansas City Mo flew here Monday. David J Moran from Pontiac Ill arrived today for business. Cecil Frederick of Mt Erie landed at the local field today. George Weingartner and Carl Edmison flew to Mt Carmel Ill and Evansville Ind today. Dr Jean Modert is a new sole student at the local feld.
Sulgrave Manor near Oxford England once home of George Washingtons ancestors remains a memorial property owned and maintained by the Colonial Dames.
The first session of a 16 hour leaders training course will be held Thursday September 15 from 7 15 to 10 15 pm at the Little House. New leaders from nearby towns invited. Thirty leaders and council members attended last night’s potluck and meeting. A monthly potluck and leaders meeting will be held the first Monday at 6 30. Camp reports and the year’s theme Hands Around the World were discussed. Catholic and Lutheran churches offered rooms for meetings. First Class Scouts asked to meet September 19 at 4 pm to form a Curved Bars troop. only First Class eligible for membership. Bring handbooks.
Massachusetts legislators consider a resolve to reverse the 1692 Salem witchcraft convictions. The measure would absolve 16 women and five men hanged between June and September 1692. Rep Daniel Rudstein filed the resolution yesterday but was unavailable for comment.
A Mt. Vernon Civic Music Association dinner at Robb’s Coffee House launched the fourth annual membership drive. Edward E. Curtis led the event with officers and community leaders present to endorse concerts for youths and adults, stressing the need for strong membership to sustain quality performances. Volunteers were briefed on outreach, with a campaign tea planned and headquarters set at the county court house.
