Firefighters answered one alarm and two emergency runs yesterday and this morning. Break-In At Boheimer Home Investigated

Vernon police checked a break-in at the unoccupied home of Leo Boheimer at 1411 Broadway. The incident occurred over the past weekend. a window was broken and the house ransacked. Boheimer, a well known resident, was injured weeks ago and resides at Lowry's nursing home.

Black Charlie Harris questioned in fires and killings near Pond Creek

Wayne County authorities said Charles Harris known as Black Charlie was questioned as part of routine inquiries into a double murder and two arson fires near his Pond Creek home. He is not a suspect. The fires destroyed corn on his property tied to a commodity loan and a farmhouse and barn. Mrs. Charles Newton and Jerry Merrit were found dead in a burned dwelling. Merrit had testified in an earlier Harris murder trial. Pearce noted Harris was not available for August questioning.

An elderly man, Willis, drifted ashore near mangroves between the Tully and Murray rivers at 11 am on Wednesday after crossing the sea on a raft.
