Mrs. Laura Agnes Shafer of Texico dies at 5:40 p.m. Monday at her daughter's home. She was 78 years old and lifelong Union Chapel member who served as Sunday School superintendent. Burial will be at the adjoining cemetery. She was born February 22, 1886, in Jefferson County to John and Sarah Whitson. She married Charles Edwin Shafer in 1907. he died in 1963. Survived by a son Hessell Shafer, daughter Rita McKinney, a brother Roy Whitson, three sisters, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

In Seaside Oregon a drenching rain curtailed what officials called the third Lator Day riot cycle since 1962. About 700 youths clashed with police over the weekend with only minor property damage seen along the main street. Road Runners Camp At Steamboat Hill Event

Jefferson county’s newly formed Road Runners camping club held its second meeting and campout at Steamboat Hill in Shawnee National Forest near Golconda. Mt. Vernon police reported three break-ins over the weekend. A window was broken at the Capps and Warren service station 1310 South Terith with about 2 cents taken from the grease room cash register. A window at the Tri City Market on South Tenth was broken and police could not confirm entry. The Ray Thompson Garage at 1016 Casey Avenue was entered by a broken window, with change taken from a container.

Gary D Stewart, 25, of Mt. Vernon Route 4, charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene after a collision at Tenth and Casey at 4 08 p m Saturday. Julia M Miller, 26, of 907 South Ninth said she halted at a stop sign when struck by a car that sped away. Stewart later posted bond and was released.
