Funeral rites held for Edward A Henry at Myers Chapel

Edward A Henry died suddenly at 4:00 a m today at 334 south Third street aged 89 years seven months five days. Funeral services Wednesday at 2:00 p m at Myers Chapel with burial in Oakwood cemetery. The body to lie in state after 3:30 p m Tuesday. Born February 3 1863 near Bluford Jefferson county son of Thomas and Malissa Hunt Henry. Survived by son Howard Henry Mt Vernon daughters Bess Hart Evansville Lena Skinner Madison brother Jim Henry Mt Vernon fourteen grandchildren twenty six great grandchildren one great great grandchild. predeceased by two sons Pearl and Will.

Funeral Tuesday for Lois Ellis of Bluford area

Funeral services for Mrs. Lois Ellis of RFD 1 Bluford will be at 2:00 p m Tuesday at Mt. Zion Church with Rev. Bird Green officiating. Burial is in Mt. Zion cemetery. The body lies at the marry home. She died at 10:30 Friday night. She was born April 4 1896 in Farrington township Jefferson county the daughter of I M and Hattie Minor Wiggins and was 56 years five months and one day. She is survived by her husband Walter Ellis and one sister Mrs. Carrie Evans of DeKalb Illinois.

Funeral services for William Logan Winkler of 801 George Street were held at 2:00 PM at Pulley Funeral Home with burial in Mt Olive cemetery near Bluford. He died from a self inflicted gunshot wound after eight years of poor health. He was born May 1, 1876 in Sacramento Illinois and was 76 years four months five days old. He married Osa McKinney in Mt Vernon on April 10, 1933, who preceded him in death. Surviving are a daughter Opal Reed and a brother Thomas Edward Winkler.

Niece of Mt. Vernon Resident Dies of Polio

Sharon K. Roberts age 11 died Saturday at Deaconess Hospital Evansville Ind from bulbar polio. She was the daughter of Mrs. Mary Stahl and a niece of Mrs. Terry Egbert and Mrs. G R Robinson of Mt. Vernon. Sharon fell ill while visiting grandparents in Carmi and died within hours of hospital admission. Survived by her parents a brother Eddie Stahl and a sister Rae Lynn Stahl at home.

Ina man escapes injury in highway crash south of town

Wilburn S. Toney of Ina escaped injury Saturday when his car was forced off Highway 37 five miles south of Ina and struck a tree. Toney, driving north, was forced off the road as a meeting car passed another vehicle.

Three Collisions On Saturday In Local Area

Three noninjury traffic crashes occurred Saturday. At 3 20 p m a collision on Tenth near Newby involved Rollie C Hampton RFD 7 and Hubert Conner of Dahlgren. At 6 30 p m Ray E Guyman Walnut Hill and Dellas Talbert 827 South 20th collided in the 1000 block of Perkins. Polio Case Reported in Jefferson County Child

The 27th polio case of the summer in Jefferson County was reported Saturday morning. Four year old Ruth Ann Bradford daughter of Lester Bradford of Salem Road has a mild polio case and is confined to her home with no fever or paralysis.

President Truman era candidates Eisenhower and Stevenson spoke to thousands of grain belt farmers at the Plowville area during the National Plowing Contest. Police reported two petty thefts over the weekend. Vernon Barnhill of 1520 South 12th Street said his new lawnmower valued at 13.50 was stolen Saturday afternoon. Paul Holloway of 1915 Richview Road reported a sunshade stolen from his car.

Stolen money recovered in Waltonville

Jefferson county deputies announced the return of money stolen from a Waltonville home. Deputy Sheriff Joe Lappin led the investigation and recovered the funds belonging to Mrs. Florence Dees. No prosecutions have been filed in the case.

Child Bitten by Squirrel Near Mt Vernon Park

Johnny Cherry aged five of 609 North Street was bitten on the finger by an injured squirrel in Mt Vernon city park Sunday afternoon. He was treated by a physician. The squirrel was killed and sent to Carbondale state lab for rabies testing.

Walter J. Wilson, 48, of this city pled guilty to a vagrancy charge Saturday in the court of W. O. Page police magistrate. He was sentenced to 90 days at the Illinois state farm at Vandalia.
