Cornelia Wallace, wife of Governor George C. Wallace, moves belongings from the Montgomery executive mansion amid reports of possible divorce. Attorneys plan an amicable settlement, while the governor offers a brief private statement.
A federal judge orders all eight defendants to stand trial together in a 1.3 million sludge hauling bribery case as jury selection begins. The Ingram Corp. of New Orleans allegedly paid intermediaries to secure 43 million in contracts for sludge transport downstate to Fulton County.
In Washington two pre dawn blasts rocked the White House Ellipse and the Aeroflot building. One blast damaged a wall at Aeroflot and no injuries were reported. A second explosion across the street from the White House prompted a long police search. Police said an anonymous call claimed responsibility and officers considered a Cuban group possible.
A student at Mt Vernon Township High School was robbed of a wallet containing 15 dollars and a 22 dollar Timex watch yesterday afternoon. He was jumped by three to four youths at about 2 40 p m on the west side of G Building. The report cites multiple assailants and a street robbery.
Neil W. Arning, 20, of Route 2 Bluford pleaded guilty in circuit court to speeding 81 mph in an E mph zone and was fined.
Mt Vernon city council filled vacancies on the Library and Park Boards reappointing Janice Callarman Joe Modert and others to new terms. New Library seats went to Rev Robert Harmon Ann Garrett filling former members Louis Pavledes and Leo Heffington. Park Board appointees include Sam Hicks Nelson Cowen Edward Hawkins Diane Mills Edith Nation with two new members Robert Bunchman and Wayne Arnold to fill remaining vacancies.
Jefferson County Comprehensive Services Inc. received a 17455 grant from the state Department of Children and Family Services to fund a 24 hour counseling service for abused children and families. The program includes round the clock telephone crisis intervention and nursing services for abused children, plus extensive services for sexually abused children and their families. The grant is among several announced this week by the state agency.
Mt Vernon city council accepted a $194000 loan and a $194000 matching grant from the Economic Development Administration for a 10 inch water line serving the west side of I 57. The five year loan will be repaid at $50000 per year for four years with the balance due in year five at 5 percent interest.
Mt Vernon city council passed a unanimous resolution praising Titter Leroy Titter former Aero Welding Supply owner at 310 S Johnson for providing free oxygen and maintenance of oxygen equipment to the city. Titter, of 1312 Wilshire, ran Aero Welding Supply for two decades benefiting local services with discounted materials and repairs at cost.
Mt Vernon Fair Director Joe Tucker, who helped firemen battle flames under the grandstand at the Mt. Vernon Fairgrounds Monday night, is not an employee of the Mt. Vernon State Fair Association. President Charles Waite said the association has no paid employees. Tucker works as fair director but is unpaid.
The Lowery Hill Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday. The meeting is open to the public.
A special meeting of the Webber Township High School board is set for 8 p.m. Thursday to discuss personnel matters.
Richard Speck, serving eight concurrent life terms for the 1966 nurse murders in Chicago, is slated for a closed parole hearing to argue for himself. Officials say there is little chance of approval this year as his first bid was denied. Parole reviews occur annually, with a new law next October allowing three year continuances.
Governor James R. Thompson approved measures raising the annual funding for railroad grade crossing improvements by 3.6 million dollars and providing 481,800 in grants for medical student scholarships. The crossing bill more than doubles motor fuel tax spending on safety at Illinois 16 grade crossings. The medical package awards 325,000 in state funds to medical students who pledge to practice in family medicine, with 1,000 stipends for those who set up in undersupplied areas. The package also allocates 56,800 to the Public Health Department to administer the scholarships and grants. Thompson also signed a measure allowing family members of disabled individuals to obtain specially marked license plates.

Vincent Burns, 19, of 813 Lamar Ave, charged in circuit court with entering a building belonging to Olin Twiggs at 214 Casey Ave on Aug 23 with intent to commit theft. Burns jailed on $750 bond after arrest at Inn Crowd Lounge. Other reports include Robert Graham, 39, charged with aggravated battery after striking city officer Brad Warren. Infant Michael Douglas Coffman, son of Mark Edward and Petra S. Gabriel Coffman of Mt. Vernon, died soon after birth at St. Mary's Hospital Centralia. A graveside service was held with Msgr. James P. Burke officiating. Also named are Floyd Daniel Ward, 69, of Enfield, who died at Welborn Hospital Evansville. Funeral services set for 11 a.m. Friday at Carmi’s Donald Campbell Funeral Home with burial in Carmi Garden of Memories Cemetery. Ward survived by wife Mary, two sons Dan and Paul, a daughter Ruth Ann, three brothers and four sisters, plus seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
William S Click, 90, of Griffith Indiana, a former Macedonia resident, died Tuesday night. Funeral arrangements were pending at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. He is survived by a sister, Golda Parks, of Macedonia.
