Mt Vernon residents and visitors are noted in a crowded social roundup. En route movements include Enfield returning to St Louis, Townsend in Fort Worth on business, and Hopkins and Shuster heading to Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Others head to Illinois and Kentucky for visits, weddings, and family events while patients and shoppers see improvements and routine travel.
The ninth annual Antique and Hobby Show, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, runs September 15 to 17 at the Mt. Vernon Armory. Exhibits include antique dealers and hobbyist loaned items, with proceeds aiding Jefferson Post 141, American Legion. Ruth Allen chairs the hobby show, with Helen Stelle on personal loans and Mrs. George Swingle on ticket sales.
Hungary's presidential council issued cease operation orders to all Roman Catholic religious orders except state-approved school groups. About 11,000 monks and nuns outside teaching orders face suspension and must leave monasteries within three months.
Vehicle speed raises crash risk and costs per mile. A Newschart based on National Safety Council data shows higher speeds increase fatal and injury crash odds and operating costs, arguing drivers reach destinations faster only at higher danger and expense.
The Logan Street Baptist church W M U hosted a society program with talks on migrants teach ing and missionary letters, a nominating committee appointed, and a choir rehearsal announced for First Methodist. Upcoming events include a Young Homemakers unit meeting and a Nu Phi Mu sorority gathering with planned raffles and activities. A Rebecca Anderson Circle meeting and a Hertenstein family reunion at Miller Lake were also noted.

Miss Joyce Nadine Meyer and Edward B. Knox wed in a September 2 ceremony at Logan Street Baptist Church. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stewart of 2019 Cherry Street, and groom Edward Knox of Salem, were joined by family and friends. The couple plans residence in Pekin, Illinois after a short trip.
Gail Johnson Jr. of Wayne County was fined 30.40 for transporting liquor with the seal broken and 13.40 for a drunk charge after Mt. Vernon police arrested him. Authorities said 17 cases of beer and a half-case of whiskey were found in the back seat of his car.
A theft report states a truck tire and rim were stolen from Oil Field Electric Co. on Benton road. Police headquarters received the report this morning.
J. K. Waddell of Memphis Tenn departed for home while D F Knott and W R Knott and others flew to the local field today. Earl Outland flew to Mendota Indiana Ed Thompson of Ashley flew to Mt Vernon and J S Lewis of Evansville flew here to transact business. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OKS SEWER BOND ISSUE.
The Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce board of directors approves the plan presented on August 10, 1950 by the Mt. Vernon City Council for a proposed sewer system. The plan includes revenue bonds and a board to maintain and operate the sanitary sewerage system.
In Lake Success on Sept 7 Soviet delegate Jacob Malik failed to bar South Korean Ambassador John M Chang from Korea talks at the United Nations Security Council. The council ruled Chang had a right to participate, while Malik condemned U S actions in Korea and called for compliance with international law.
Washington report says FBI Director J Edgar Hoover told senators in closed session the bureau could arrest up to 12,000 dangerous Communists if war with Russia erupts. He cited half of them as American citizens, and noted Congress had been asked for funds to hire more agents and clerks to monitor the threat. The Senate panel quoted Hoover on prosecutorial decisions and praised the scope of known radicals totaling over 50,000.
In a Korea bound C-54 crash over southern Japan three International News Service correspondents Frank Emery Charles Rosecrans Jr and Key Inouye were killed along with four passengers and four crew. Emery had recently been wounded in Red Korea territory. Sixteen war correspondents are now listed as dead or missing in action.

The Jefferson Encampment No 182 and Dan G Melton Ladies Auxiliary hold a regular meeting Friday night September 8 at 7 30 p m in the Patriarchal degree officers C E Weatherly C P Roy Weingartner Scribe present.
United Spanish War Veterans Gen Eben Swift Camp No 94 and Auxiliary will meet at the Public Library Friday at 7 00 pm for a regular session. Officers for next year will be elected and attendance is important. No entertainment. E W Threlkeld adjutant.
Pfc Dwight L Huston, burned in Korea on July 19, leaving a hospital in Japan, has rejoined his heavy mortar company of the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Division in Korea. The 18 year old son of Mr and Mrs Lester Huston of RFD 6 sent letters home noting improved hands, relocation from the front to a rest area and new gear. He described receiving paper, razor blades and cigarettes from the Red Cross and mentioned a cousin Richard Huston visiting the unit. Dwight enlisted at Mt Vernon and asked his hometown paper be sent to him. His address appears as RA 16317700, Mortar Company, 4th Inf Reg, 24th Dir, APO 2-3, care of San Francisco Postmaster.
At 8 45 a m today firemen were called to Dowzer Electric Co where transformer oil began burning from a rubbish fire. The blaze was extinguished on arrival and caused no damage.
W. L. Burns and Darlas Mae Burns of Mt. Vernon obtained a marriage license, marking the legal union of the couple in the local records.
