Visiting neighbors crowd Mt Vernon area notes

A long list of residents and relatives visit Mt Vernon and surrounding towns. People arrive from Chicago, Blu Ford, Nashville, Salem, Davenport, and other places, with many returning from trips to Wisconsin, Florida, Oregon, and Tennessee.

Births at Good Samaritan Hospital leave families joyful

Mr and Mrs John Davis of Flora welcome daughter Linda Diane born Sunday night at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mrs Davis is former Ramona McKinney of this city. Mr and Mrs Joseph Carlton Gunnell and Mr and Mrs Joseph James Przygoda welcomed sons this morning. Oscar Fenton and William Frank Donelson also reported newborns at Good Samaritan. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Donelson at 304 North 11th Street. Lightning kills about 500 per year in the United States with around 100 deaths monthly in August.

Miss Helen Garrison Weds Allen Sailer in Mt Vernon

Miss Helen Louise Garrison daughter of Mr and Mrs Dave Garrison of Dahlgren married Sunday afternoon September 4 to Allen Sailer son of Mr and Mrs Albert Sailer of Carmi. The double ring ceremony at four o clock at the first Baptist church Mt Vernon was officiated by Rev Andrew Carraker with Mildred Benz and Glenn Sailer as attendants. The couple plans a honeymoon trip to the East and will reside on a farm near Carmi Tl.

Circle Service Meeting at Mt Vernon City Park

The Christian Service Circle will meet at Mt. Vernon City Park at two o'clock Thursday afternoon. A large attendance is desired. The Solomon Reunion will be held Sunday, September 11, at Mt. Vernon City Park with a noon basket dinner. All relatives and friends are welcome. The Mt. Vernon Garden Club meets Friday September 9 at 2 o'clock with Mrs. Fannie Walace, 714 Main street. Members urged to attend as the proposed constitution and bylaws will be voted on. Mrs. Troy Hawkins speaks on Makers of Our Gardens Biographies. A board meeting is called for 1 o'clock.

Phyllis opened gifts then attendees enjoyed square dancing and watermelon later in the evening.

Green Hills Country Club Labor Day Party Highlights

The Green Hills Country Club held its all day Labor Day event with about 350 attendees. Golf results featured Underwood and Brehm’s 72 on top, followed by Quiett and Sapper at 73. other prize crews included Hess, Metcalf, and Gamber. Activities ranged from bridge and croquet to sack races and hot dogs, ending with a potluck dinner and a dance at the new pavilion. Moving pictures were taken by William Gamber as committees led by Clarence Norsworthy and Mrs. Harry Lasater organized the day.

Progress in Improving Old Union Cemetery Campaign

Interest grows in improving the Old Union cemetery with new markers at unmarked graves and planned stone repairs. Donors include George D. Williams Fern Watson Florence Lyon and many others as work may begin soon. The cemetery, Jefferson county’s first public burial ground, saw Rhoda Allen buried in 1820 and stories of pioneer hardships shared by Fern Watson. A $3000 McAtee trust funds upkeep funding, with 3 percent annual income. The drive seeks mower-ready upkeep and non profit leadership, with contributions welcome to Williams or committee members.

Shirley May France a 17 year old Somerset Massachusetts schoolgirl announced she will attempt to swim the English channel again after being pulled from the water yesterday following a 10 hour 42 minute effort. She was rescued about six miles from her goal as chop and cold currents sapped her strength and grease washed from her shoulders.
