A long list of residents and relatives visit Mt Vernon and surrounding towns. People arrive from Chicago, Blu Ford, Nashville, Salem, Davenport, and other places, with many returning from trips to Wisconsin, Florida, Oregon, and Tennessee.
Mr and Mrs John Davis of Flora welcome daughter Linda Diane born Sunday night at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mrs Davis is former Ramona McKinney of this city. Mr and Mrs Joseph Carlton Gunnell and Mr and Mrs Joseph James Przygoda welcomed sons this morning. Oscar Fenton and William Frank Donelson also reported newborns at Good Samaritan. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Donelson at 304 North 11th Street. Lightning kills about 500 per year in the United States with around 100 deaths monthly in August.
Miss Helen Louise Garrison daughter of Mr and Mrs Dave Garrison of Dahlgren married Sunday afternoon September 4 to Allen Sailer son of Mr and Mrs Albert Sailer of Carmi. The double ring ceremony at four o clock at the first Baptist church Mt Vernon was officiated by Rev Andrew Carraker with Mildred Benz and Glenn Sailer as attendants. The couple plans a honeymoon trip to the East and will reside on a farm near Carmi Tl.
The Christian Service Circle will meet at Mt. Vernon City Park at two o'clock Thursday afternoon. A large attendance is desired. The Solomon Reunion will be held Sunday, September 11, at Mt. Vernon City Park with a noon basket dinner. All relatives and friends are welcome. The Mt. Vernon Garden Club meets Friday September 9 at 2 o'clock with Mrs. Fannie Walace, 714 Main street. Members urged to attend as the proposed constitution and bylaws will be voted on. Mrs. Troy Hawkins speaks on Makers of Our Gardens Biographies. A board meeting is called for 1 o'clock.
Local Presbyterian adult choir schedules a 7 PM rehearsal tonight with full attendance requested. The Women's Missionary Society of Second Baptist plans Thursday 10 AM meeting at Mrs Willie Gregorys home 27th and Broadway to observe Week of Prayer for State Missions with a noon covered dish luncheon.
Mr and Mrs A D Hanes of Dahlgren announce the engagement of their daughter Mary Jane to Pfc James William Tucker son of the Rev and Mrs Charles Tucker of Jefferson City Mo The wedding is planned for the near future
A miscellaneous shower and a kitchen shower marked the lead up to Phyllis Maxwell and Anthony La Fata’s upcoming wedding. Hostesses Aline Hutchison Mrs Donald Lee and Mrs M J King hosted a Friday luncheon for 32 guests in the L and Nafé private dining room decorated with garden flowers. Jane Maynor and Loret ta Wall hosted a kitchen shower and hamburger fry at the Maynor residence on Centralia Road with an outdoor fireplace and pavilion. Phyllis opened gifts then attendees enjoyed square dancing and watermelon later in the evening.

Mrs Harriet Edith McCracken entertained her bridge club at her home last evening. Mrs Glen Pettit, Mrs Gilbert Wallace and Mrs Tom Oakley were awarded bridge prizes. A luncheon was served before bridge.
The Clinton reunion is set for Sunday September 11 at Mt Vernon City Park with a noon basket dinner and afternoon entertainment. A featured item will be a genuine war record of James Clinton for the American Revolution and newly found Clinton family history.
The Green Hills Country Club held its all day Labor Day event with about 350 attendees. Golf results featured Underwood and Brehm’s 72 on top, followed by Quiett and Sapper at 73. other prize crews included Hess, Metcalf, and Gamber. Activities ranged from bridge and croquet to sack races and hot dogs, ending with a potluck dinner and a dance at the new pavilion. Moving pictures were taken by William Gamber as committees led by Clarence Norsworthy and Mrs. Harry Lasater organized the day.
Interest grows in improving the Old Union cemetery with new markers at unmarked graves and planned stone repairs. Donors include George D. Williams Fern Watson Florence Lyon and many others as work may begin soon. The cemetery, Jefferson county’s first public burial ground, saw Rhoda Allen buried in 1820 and stories of pioneer hardships shared by Fern Watson. A $3000 McAtee trust funds upkeep funding, with 3 percent annual income. The drive seeks mower-ready upkeep and non profit leadership, with contributions welcome to Williams or committee members.
Shirley May France a 17 year old Somerset Massachusetts schoolgirl announced she will attempt to swim the English channel again after being pulled from the water yesterday following a 10 hour 42 minute effort. She was rescued about six miles from her goal as chop and cold currents sapped her strength and grease washed from her shoulders.

Glen Harold Harlow of Webber township died yesterday at 45. He was born August 26, 1904 in Webber township and survived by three brothers Pearl, Arthur and Harry and three sisters Dana Asher Nora Ward and Ethel Montague. Funeral services will be Friday at Harmony Baptist Church at 2 PM with Rev. J A Ward officiating. Burial will be in Harmony cemetery. The body will lie in Myers Chapel after 1 PM Thursday. Preceded in death by his parents a brother Neal and two sisters Evele and Velma.
News reaches Mt. Vernon of the death of James Powell of Owensboro Kentucky father of Nick Powell former Mt. Vernon resident. He died Monday in Owensboro with funeral services at 2:00 PM and burial in Richmond Kentucky. Nick Powell formerly worked for Sohio while living in Mt. Vernon and now resides in Richmond Kentucky.

Executors for Charles W. Nash heir to a 43.18 million estate estimate a 75 percent reduction from taxes and levies. The federal inheritance tax payment of 23.50 million was handed to the government. A baby boy was born last night at St. John's Hospital ten minutes after his 20 year old mother died of polio. Mrs. Arlene Sachan of Shobonier was brought in an ambulance from 71 miles away and died soon after arrival under an oxygen tent. A Springfield physician and Vandalia hospital staff physician delivered the child by caesarean operation. The baby was']?>
