Local residents attend the Du Quoin Fair and visit relatives in Illinois and Michigan. Several individuals travel for education, family reunions, and summer trips, with assignments to James Millikin University and nursing programs in St. Louis. Continuous weekend visits include Springfield, Chicago, East St. Louis, and Rochelle.
Hugh R. Anderson son of Mrs. Charles Nation and Patricia Allen daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Allen were married at the Christian Church in Carson City on a Friday evening in September. Anderson, a June graduate of the University of Illinois, is employed by Arabian Oil Co and stationed in San Francisco where the couple will reside.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold its regular meeting tonight at 7 30 in the Legion home. Plans for the year will be made and all members are urged to attend.
The all day gathering of the Deborah Circle of the Westminster Society of the Presbyterian church scheduled for Thursday Sept 9 has been indefinitely postponed.
A farewell dinner was held at Mt Vernon city park Saturday evening for Deloris King who will leave to study at St Marys School of Nursing in East St Louis. About 40 relatives and friends attended and presented gifts. Out-of-town guests included Mr and Mrs DuBall and daughter of Centralia.

Patsy Ruth Harton and Maurice Hogue marry in Morganfield Ky at 10 a.m. Sunday with Attendants Mr. and Mrs. Sam Kraft. Patsy Ruth, a Benton High School graduate, later worked for Commercial Telephone Co.. Maurice Hogue, Mt. Vernon Township High School graduate, served 40 months in European and Pacific theaters. now with Mound City Furniture Co. They will reside in Mt. Vernon.
Leonard Ainscough aged 45 of RFD 4 Mt. Vernon sustained a forehead cut in a car collision at 8 55 p m Sunday at Tenth and Main. He was not seriously hurt. Other driver was Stanton M Fowler 28 of 803 North street.

The Illinois Supreme Court ordered Progressive party nominees for Cook County offices to be placed on the Cook County general election ballot. The ruling covers county legislative and congressional seats in Cook County and does not affect the state wide ban on Progressive state and national tickets. The court reversed the Appellate Court, whose stay of a Cook County Circuit Court order to list Progressive names was found to be without jurisdiction. The party fielded four Congressional candidates, 12 for the Illinois House and a slate for county offices.

At 10 am Sunday five persons were injured in a collision involving two cars and a truck on highway 460 two miles west of Mt. Vernon during heavy rain. Richard Hopper of Ashley Ward Butler of Ina and Opal Reinlein of near Mt. Vernon drove the vehicles. Butler suffered arm injuries and two other occupants Clella Connor and Gordon Kirk both of Ina were hurt. Connor remained at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital and Kirk was treated by a local physician. Investigating county officers reported two Hopper occupants also injured.
The Mt. Vernon area recorded 2.62 inches of rainfall over Labor Day weekend with 1.93 inches on Sunday and .69 on Monday. Temperatures cooled from the high 90s to 70 on Sunday and rose to 82 on Monday, signaling a marked climate shift.
