41 Injured as Bus Collides with Truck on Turnpike

A Pennsylvania Greyhound night express from New York to Washington struck a truck on the New Jersey Turnpike five miles south of Bordentown. Forty-one aboard the bus and two on the truck were injured. The bus left the road, rolled down a 10 foot embankment into a field. Twenty-two were hospitalized, one listed very critical. Driver Joseph W. Fox of Philadelphia among the injured. truck driver William P James Jr. of Conyers, N. Y., and his wife treated for minor injuries. Ambulances from ten towns aided, floodlights lit the wreck as crews worked at the scene 11 miles southeast of Trenton.

Allied Army in Europe to Have Bombs

General J Lawton Collins stated Allied forces in Europe will be supported by atomic weapons in the future. He said integration discussions cover artillery and guided missiles, but these weapons are not immediately available and do not reduce needed divisions in Europe. He projected weapons arriving within less than 19 years and noted uncertainty about Soviet atomic artillery.

Accident on West Main Causes Car Collision

A parked car owned by Jay B Stringer of 9 Hillcrest Drive was struck by an unknown vehicle at 7:30 last night in the 1400 block of Main Street. Police have not identified the other driver.

Washington manpower chief Arthur S. Flemming told a Mt Pocono Pennsylvania audience that student deferments must not be bypassed by becoming a father. He warned 3.7 million men may stay under arms 10 to 20 years to counter Communism and called for fewer college deferments if men become fathers after a set date.

Burglar Tells Way To Loot In Highland Park Trash

Pittsburgh police report a July 4 robbery yielded a $125 watch a $107 camera and a $10 lighter found in a trash can after a caller instructed officers to search the Highland Park Zoo entrance area. Sgt Elmer Hardy notes the suspect claimed a sharp plan and a guilty conscience.

Suit to Divorce Wife Filed by Arthur Feltman

Arthur Feltman filed suit for divorce against Mamie Feltman in circuit court on a cruelty claim. The couple married February 21 1925 and separated August 27 1952. The law firm DeWitt and Woodruff represents the plaintiff.

Driving Cases In Court Here Not Guilty For Lingo

Orion Lingo of West Frankfort stood trial on a drunken driving charge and was found not guilty by Judge Morton F. Dorothy. The prior day William Clarence Mason of Fairfield pleaded guilty to a drunk driving charge, receiving one year probation and $28.20 in costs.

Mt. Vernon firemen made two runs yesterday at 1 05 p m to contain a shed blaze. Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures. No injuries were reported.

Large Crowd of Young GOPs at Meeting Here

A large crowd gathered for the Young Republicans meeting at Joe Frank Allen's farm north of Mt. Vernon last night. Acting chairman Demetri Hassakis called the event a huge success. Five candidates for county and state offices spoke, including S. O. Dale, Claude Travers, Jerry Gott, J. Chris Johnson and Hassakis. The group set September 13 at Mt. Vernon City Hall for the next business meeting to elect permanent officers. Music was provided by the Egptionaires.

Ship Breaks Up In Storm Off Charleston

The Honduran tanker Foundation Star split in two about 130 miles southeast of Charleston after a fierce storm. The Coast Guard reported a 30 man crew, with 17 rescued by the Norwegian ship Emu and one lifeboat recovered. Four destroyers were diverted to aid the search, expected to arrive by 3 p.m. CST. One lifeboat remained missing and two crewmen refused rescue.

August births and deaths in Mt. Vernon show gender split

Sixty nine babies were born in Mt. Vernon in August per the City Clerk Lester Davis. Males numbered forty five and females twenty four. Thirty residents died during the same period.

Blaze destroys shed on South Harrison Street

Fire crews extinguished a blaze at 813 South Harrison Street owned by Evelyin Metje. Damage described as not heavy. The shed was started by a rubbish fire. At 3 15 p m they controlled a weed and grass fire in the 1100 block of South 22nd.

Marine Gets Special Pass to Visit His Girl

A New York City taxicab reunion gave Marine sergeant Hugh E. Kidd Jr. and Patricia Hayes a fleeting moment together before his return to Korea. Kidd, 22, from Baton Rouge, arrived on a four day pass from Camp Lejeune to see the Bronx woman, 20, after a tough Labor Day search, with plans to marry later not now. He departs for Korea Monday as Marine officials arranged the special pass to renew their visit.

Fined for Sale of Liquor After Closing Hours

Mt. Vernon police arrested Clifton Barner for selling liquor after midnight at the American Legion Club 60 on Ninth Street. Liquor was allegedly sold at 2 35 a m. He appeared before Magistrate W O Page and pleaded guilty, receiving a $55.40 fine.

County Board of Supervisors to Meet for September Session

The Jefferson County Board of Supervisors will meet at the courthouse next Monday morning for the regular September session. Officials expect to adopt the budget and levy to fund operations for the coming year, with completion anticipated in two days.
