A long list of residents and visitors spent the weekend in various locales including Cairo Mt Vernon St Louis and Louisville. People from Mt Vernon Fairfield Fairfield Opdyke and Bonnie visited relatives and friends in Bloomington Paducah Chattanooga and Kan sas City.
Society notes report Miss Rose Ann Stanick daughter of Mr and Mrs Philip Stanick Waltonville Illinois married Saturday September 3 at 11 oclock to Clarence Neal Shane Jr son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Neal Shane Sr Route 2 Mt Vernon The double ring ceremony took place at Rev Lepton Harpoles home on Benson Road with Ruth Holloway and Lawrence Tolley as witnesses A reception and shower planned for September 8 at Krugers Hall Scheller Illinois Also covered are other society items including Rose Mary Shreve and Vivien Harvey wedding in Hernando Mississippi Ann Minor birthday party Sarah Circle and other local social events and visits by residents to St Louis Kansas City and Portland.
The Boyd Sunshine Club met September 1 at Mrs Verneil Garren’s home with Mrs Clarence Benjamin as co host. Twelve members and one guest Miss Betty Barr attended a school girl themed meeting with geography spelling arithmetic and music contests and prizes. Refreshments were served in lunch bags. The October meeting will be at Mrs Melvin Douthitt’s home.
Clinton Cannon of 814 Harrison attends ACACIA regional conference and leadership training at University of Illinois Spanpelte. Delegates from 15 chapters participate in one of four national programs run by ACADIA. Cannon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Cannon.
The Loyal Homebuilders and Men’s Ninety and Nine Bible classes of the Central Church of Christ will join for a 7 o’clock dinner in the church lower auditorium. A large attendance is expected and visitors are welcome.
Pleasant Grove Women's Society of Christian Service will hold a meeting at Mrs Murland Fosters home on Thursday evening. The program committee chair and members will present an interesting program and recreation. All members are urged to attend and visitors are welcome.
The Naomi Circle of the Westminster Society of the First Presbyterian Church will meet at 7 30 Thursday evening September 8 at 1807 Pace Avenue for dessert. Mrs Harold Johnson will be assisting hostess. Mrs A H Wheeler will give the program.
A miscellaneous wedding shower was held Friday evening August 26 at the home of Mr and Mrs Elvin McFarling on Opdyke Avenue to honor newlyweds Mr and Mrs W R Mannen. Hostess assisted by Doris June Clifton and Betty Lee Alexander. Games were played and prizes awarded. Mr and Mrs Mannen received many beautiful gifts.
Mary Alice Newell and Keith L. Mills wed on Sunday September 4 in a Waltonville Blu ford Ill ceremony. They will reside in Mt Vernon for now. The notice also covers bar meeting attendees and Rotary Club luncheon highlights with Jack Thatcher of Master Baking Co discussing bread history and production details.
Mr and Mrs Moore observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary with about two hundred attendees from Ohio Indiana and the local community. They married September 12 1899 at the First Methodist Church Mt Vernon and have resided on their farm. Five children nine grandchildren and one great grandchild joined relatives for the celebration with gifts and flowers including a purple orchid from Mr Moore.
Mr and Mrs Glen Johnson of Bishop Court welcomed a six pound two ounce daughter named Jeanette Joyce born at 5 45 am Sunday at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. Mr and Mrs Charles Robert Fornear of Lesser welcomed a daughter Charlotte Jean at Jefferson Memorial Hospital weighing eight pounds 11 ounces. Mr and Mrs Thomas Edward Pavelonia of South 21st street welcomed a daughter Alice Diane born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital weighing seven pounds nine ounces. Mr and Mrs Oscar Cabanal Cheatham of South 13th street welcomed a daughter Paula Jean at Good Samaritan Hospital weighing six pounds six ounces. Mr and Mrs Ellis Jones of Opdyke welcomed a six pound 14 ounce son born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital.
The Jefferson County Board of Supervisors will hold a regular session at the county courthouse next Tuesday September 13. They will act on bills for the preceding three months.
Mt. Vernon junior policemen collected 306.94 dollars on Saturday in a Tag Day drive to fund uniforms. The proceeds support the young officers as they prepare for duty.

Raymond D. Mathis 55 of 313% south Tenth Street died at 8 45 am Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital after four days as a patient. Funeral services were held at 2 00 pm today at Pulley Funeral Home with Rev Bayne Wilson officiating and Oakwood cemetery burial. He belonged to Painters Local No 888 Mt Vernon. Born July 9 1894 in Johnson County Ill to John and Ellen Mathis. Survived by three daughters and nine grandchildren.

Robert Allen Latham Sr. of 524 S 24th street died suddenly of a heart attack at 6 45 pm Monday. He was 60 years four months and 26 days old. A Standard Oil supervisor salesman, he married Lillian Schmidt in 1911 and is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter plus four sisters and a brother. Funeral set for Wednesday at Myers Chapel with Masonic Lodge involvement. Burial planned in Kankakee Illinois Thursday. He was born April 9 1889 in Bloomington.
Gary Lee Cullins five day old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Culling of Ninth and George died yesterday morning at St. Marys Hospital in East St. Louis. Born August 30 at Good Samaritan Hospital, he was taken to East St. Louis hospital after birth. Funeral will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of God Seventh and Con ger with burial in Sursa cemetery. The body was to be moved from Osborn Funeral Home to the family home for calling hours. Survived by parents Naomi Tate Cullins and John Cullins and a brother Henry Bruce Cullins, age two.
