William Hart Kelley commonly known as Les Kelley 70 of Herrin died at 4 a.m. at his home. Born in Ina November 5 1902 he was a former Mt. Vernon resident. He is survived by his wife Zena a daughter Marcella West Norcross Ga two grandchildren three great grandchildren two brothers Bernie Mt. Vernon Armand Bloomington and two sisters Gladys Robertson Ina and Eola Hays Joliet. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Johnson Funeral Home Herrin.

Three Kentucky men charged in rape of a bicyclist

A 22 year old St Paul woman on a bicycle tour accepted a ride near Madisonville Kentucky. She was taken to Cave In Rock Illinois and raped. The next day she identified one assailant and three men were arrested John L Stokes 21 William M Huddleston 19 and James R Morgan 21 all of Madisonville Kentucky.

Larry Sykes, 54, was found slain in his south side basement apartment. He apparently was struck on the left forehead with a hatchet and several fingers on his left hand were severed as he defended himself. No forced entry. police suspect familiarity with the assailant. Police Arrest in Mt Vernon Station Over Bicycle Theft

A 17-year-old Mt. Vernon youth was arrested at the Mt. Vernon Police Station after presenting for an unrelated matter. Carlyle Police notified local officers of a warrant for Howard Higgins, 17, of 1112 Wescott Street, who was taken into custody and held in the city jail. A Clinton County deputy later picked him up on a charge of stealing a 10 speed bicycle from Dean Newkirk of Carlyle on August 13, with bond set at $1,900.
