Three Rural Fires Hit Mt Vernon Area Over Weekend
Mt Vernon rural firemen answered three calls over the weekend. At G B Holman farm two miles north a field and woods fire lit a tractor and threatened a barn. Earlier a weed fire at Kenneth Greene home on Fairfield Road was controlled. Yesterday a Curtis Flower Shop on Centralia Road suffered burning electric wires but no damage to the shop.

Car Destroyed By Fire Near Nason Road
A 1941 model car driven by Vernon man William Coleman halted on state route 142 near Nason Road at 1 00 p m Monday when it caught fire. Three Deaths At Air Races In Detroit Storm
The International Aviation Exposition at Wayne Major Airport ended after a three day run in a torrential storm. A spectator, Harry Withers, was killed by lightning as crowds of about 75 000 endured rain hail and 50 mph winds. Lost 35 Found At Park In Labor Day Return
A billfold with 35 dollars lost at the city park during Labor Day was safely returned to the owner. The finder, a 12 year old boy, brought the money to park superintendent Frank Tittle who also received a diaper bag. Mrs Virgil Hatfield later claimed the bag. The boy’s name was not learned.

Firemen Respond to Roof Blaze and Grill Fire
Mt. Vernon firemen answered three calls during Labor Day week. At 1:45 a.m. Sunday they dealt with grease burning on a grill at L. and N. Cafe with no damage. On Monday at 10:30 a.m. the living room roof and ceiling at Evan Turner 524 Bell were damaged by fire. At 6:00 p.m. Monday a short in wiring caused slight damage to a truck in the 300 block of South 12th.

Calf Chased by Police in Mt. Vernon
Mt. Vernon police chased a loose calf on Perkins Avenue near Tenth and 12th streets after an early report. The calf was not found, and a second report placed it in Shawnee Street’s 1100 block where officers pursued it into a cornfield behind the Wagner Electric Co. plant but it eluded capture.
