Local residents report returning from visits in California Indiana and Missouri. The Du Quoin fair draws many locals including Mrs Hazel Pollard and Mr and Mrs Jo Walker. Several families travel for family visits with relatives in St Louis Centralia and Miami while others attend events in Mt Vernon and nearby towns.
Mr and Mrs Howard Graham 1616 S 6th welcome a son Freddie James born at home this morning. Mr and Mrs Charles Ward F205 south 27th street have a six pound eight ounce daughter born 7 55 p m at Jefferson Memorial Hospital she is unnamed. Mr and Mrs Andrew Cyzajkowski Woodlawn greet a daughter born yesterday at Good Samaritan Hospital. A son born to Mr and Mrs James Wallace Kerr Fairfield this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr and Mrs Amele Moore 713 North 11th Street have a daughter born at 842 a m today at Good Samaritan Hospital she is Mary Ann. A daughter born to Mr and Mrs Clyde Wicks 707 Casey Avenue this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital she is Peggy Lee.
Jefferson Memorial records admit Dorothy C. Brooks and note discharges for Anabess Walsh. Good Samaritan lists Amele In Moore admission and multiple discharges including Laura Hicks and infant Peggy Lee, Virginia Pigg and infant Linda Joyce, and Helen Waugh.
Members of the Gold Stripe Chapter No 28 Disabled American Veterans are urged to attend the regular meeting at city hall at 8 p m this evening. At 2 37 p m yesterday firefighters were called to Seventh and Maple street where a pile of lumber had caught fire.
The Friendship Circle met with 14 members at Mrs Dee Southerds home with Florence Johnson co hosting. Prizes went to Bertie Arnold Ruby Artis Florence Stroud Pat Irwin and Mona Clark. Reunions include Fleener Newburg Sept 5 at Mt Vernon city park Pierce reunion Sept 5 at Brush Harbor church featuring songs sermons and dinner. Fern Leaf Camp No 694 meets Sept 7 30 at LOOF hall with refreshments. Jaycees Ladies Night featured Miss Cuma Cook and others at Charles Hall lake with 56 attendees. Lions Club luncheon showcased Mt Vernon high seniors Ellis Lipps Mayo Von Behren Campbell and Miller performing in piano and vocal numbers.
John C. Virden, director of the Commerce Department Office of Industry Cooperation, resigned from federal service in Washington. The move follows political pressure after his 22-year-old daughter Euphemia, employed by Tass, the Soviet news agency, drew scrutiny in June. Virden had been overseeing allocations of steel to essential users.
About 100 people representing Agricultural Conservation Associations from 25 southern Illinois counties gathered at Hotel Emmerson today for a discussion on grain storage problems. The meeting was called by the state production and marketing administration.
The Communications Commission authorized the transfer of WCNT and WONT-FM at Centralia AL from Hobart Stephenson to WENT Inc for 120000. The new company is led by George F. Isaac of Chicago, who with his wife owns all stock.
Centralia city council on September 2 tentatively agreed to issue 810000 in water revenue bonds to Bod Van Ingen Co of Chicago to finance improvements and expansion of the city’s water system.
A Progressive senatorial candidate, Professor William T Starr, reported being pelted and having a loud speaker smashed during a rally. He described a mob that followed him from Zeigler to Herrin, with threats and stones, while his family sought safety in a car. Police protection was sought as further appearances were canceled or moved.
A doctor described a tense scene with youths throwing stones and shouting, comparing the mob to hysteria seen in history. He noted no similar event across the state and cited a Chicago political writer claiming such a demonstration couldn’t occur north of the Mason-Dixon line, but asserted it did.
A segregation issue sparked debate on the VFW convention floor but no action was taken. The Committee on Americanism proposed banning future national encampments in segregated cities. the resolution was tabled. Negro delegates pressed the issue as Joseph Robbins of Chicago voiced complaints of insult since arriving in St Louis.
Mrs Gertrude Kelley a former resident of Mt Vernon died at her home in Elco St this morning She is survived by her husband John Kelley of Elco and a son Bob Kelley of Mt Vernon Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
Washington dispatch says the Class of 1924 lined up at draft registration centers as Selective Service issued its first official call for 10,000 young men to serve. The first draftees are expected to wear olive drab in November with no state quotas announced yet.
A nationwide registration push ends September 18 for those turning 19 this year. The process began Monday with 25 year old men eligible to sign up for possible service. A body must generate lift and propulsion to fly overcoming gravity and drag.
