Funeral services for Ethel L. Rash Monday at Church of God

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Lucinda Rash of 716 Herbart Street will be held at 10:00 A M Monday at the 15th Street Church of God with Rev. William P Seibert officiating. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Myers Chapel after 4:00 P M Sunday. The body will be taken to the church at 9:00 A M Monday.

Pauline Surina Dies At Sesser Funeral Monday

Pauline Surina, 79, died at her Sesser home Friday of an apparent heart attack. Funeral services are planned Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sesser with Fr. Angelo Lombardi officiating, burial at Maple Hill Cemetery. She was born November 6, 1882 in Austria and survived by two sons, two daughters, a brother, nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Seven Polish stowaways seek asylum after trawler escape

Six young Polish stowaways overpowered a four man crew of a small Polish trawler and fled to Sweden through Baltic storms. After arrival in Sweden one crew member joined the defectors. Seven persons out of ten aboard the trawler asked for political asylum, police said at Moerbylanga on the Swedish island.

Hunt Strangler Of 6 Women

Boston police continued the largest manhunt in 30 years for a single strangler of six elderly women living alone. Investigators cite a man with mental illness history and police record, active in at least seven hospitals in the Boston area. Five victims had hospital or medical backgrounds, including two nurses and a physiotherapist. The latest: Jane Sullivan, 67, found strangled in her first floor apartment after being dead about 10 days.

Mt Vernon began public water service in 1892 with the Mt Vernon Water Works Company formed November 26, 1891. Early sources included a pond near the L N Depot and Casey Fork Creek, with a Tolle Road pump station site bought in 1896. The city bought the system in 1900 for 40000, funded by 55000 in Certificates and a mortgage, then sold to Citizens Gas Electric and Heating in 1902 for one dollar. Ownership shifted to Southern Illinois Light and Power in 1919 and later Illinois Cities Water Company in 1946.
