August Bride Mannen M cFarling wed in Morganfield KY

Jacqueline McFarling daughter of Mr and Mrs Elvin McFarling married William Robert Mannen son of Mrs Nell Mannen in a double ring ceremony at the Morganfield Methodist church. Rev Robert Prentiss officiated. Attendants were Mr Jack L Gray and Mrs Gray. They plan to reside in St Louis.

Opdyke Man Injured in Route 460 Sideswipe Accident

Clyde Jones of Opdyke, 23, suffered a compound fracture of his left arm and shoulder when an automobile and a truck sideswiped on U S Route 460 about a mile east of Ashley at 10 45 last night. Delbert Martin of Belle Rive and Robert Hayes of Mt Vernon were slightly injured. Jones was taken to St Marys Hospital in Centralia and reported as doing well. State Patrolman Howard Greathouse investigated. the automobile was heavily damaged while the truck sustained little damage.

Salem South Baptist Association Chooses Moderators

The 96th annual Salem South Baptist Association meeting opens at East Side Baptist with 400 in attendance. Rev. Sam McCoy elected moderator and Rev. Ross Partridge named clerk. Twenty eight churches represented from Cen tralia Ewing Benton Fairfield Manteno McLeansboro Carbon dale Herrin Pleasant Valley Walligaton D. C. and Springfield avila. The two day session ends Friday evening. The association covers 30 churches in Jefferson Wayne Marion and Washington counties.

August Weather Beats Heat In Mt Vernon

August 1949 ended cool after a hot start with 18 days of 90 plus temps and a peak 98 degrees. Rainfall was below normal for the second straight year, totaling 1.90 inches against a 3.65 inch average, with only one day over an inch and five light showers after the third. The lowest reading reached 55 degrees.

Polio Patient Out of Hospital

Linda Mas Kiselewski four year old daughter of Mr and Mrs John Kiselewski of Waltonville was discharged from the East St Louis Hospital August 31 where she has been a polio patient since July 19. She is greatly improved.

Capitol after the press conference that Mr. Truman, in retaining Vaughan, is saying in effect that it is proper for Vaughan to peddle influence. Furthermore, he said, the retention not only encourages other government employes to follow Vaughan's example, but says to them that what Vaughan has done is proper go thou and do like wise.

Polio Fatality in Illinois Man Dies from Infantile Paralysis

Arthur H. Hill, 37, of Effingham, Illinois, died at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield from infantile paralysis. He was admitted to the hospital on Monday.

Mount Vernon Day train fare cut at Chicago Railroad Fair

Jacque York Miss Mt. Vernon 1949 will visit Chicago to reign over Mount Vernon Day at the Chicago Railroad Fair. The C&EI Railroad offers special reduced round trip fares from Mt. Vernon to Chicago, with events at the Pump Room and Mount Vernon Day activities at the fairgrounds. The teenager will be hosted by the C&EI and Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce and hopes to meet famous singers during her trip.

Ex High School Journalists Gather for Reunion Dinner

Ex high school publication workers met at Robbs Cafe for a 75 person reunion led by Mt. Vernon High School journalism teacher Lloyd R. DeWitt. Betty Anthis presided, Elizabeth Leevy directed songs, and Dolores Purcell played piano while Vernon News issues lined the tables. The group planned an annual gathering and shared memories of editing the Orange and Black Vernois News or Plume.

Special rail fares to Chicago fair attract Mt. Vernon riders

Mt. Vernon residents are urged to take advantage of a one way ticket plus 25 cents with a five day return privilege on the C and ET to Chicago. The trip offers access to exhibits of railroad equipment and history at the Railroad Fair on Chicago's lake front, the site of the 1933 World's Fair.
