Vol E Richardson of 200 12th street reports the death of his wife after a long illness. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
Word has been received of the death of Charles M. Leslie, 47, of Burnt Woods Oregon, a former resident of Mt. Vernon. He died Thursday at his home. He was the son in law of Mrs. Maggie Owens of Route 11 Woodlawn.
A Navy jet crash aboard the carrier Essex near Jacksonville, Florida killed the pilot Lt James C Steel and airman Charles E Porter burned to death. Six planes were destroyed or damaged and extensive carrier damage followed before the Essex returned to duty hours later.
A destitute family of seven stranded in Mt Vernon last night received aid from local groups. A man and wife with five children reported they were broke and hungry while en route to Salem Ohio. The police department gave $10 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars contributed 5. The A and P Store supplied groceries.
Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Moses of Tolle Road announce the birth of a daughter on Sunday May 24 at Franklin County Hospital in Benton. The baby weighs six and a half pounds and is named Elizabeth Diane. Mrs. Moses has served as band director for the past year at Summersville Grade School.
Jefferson Memorial reports admissions including Mrs. Ruby Mae Bean and John David Shields among others. Discharges include Ira Jeffrey Green Walt, Mrs. Mary Ann Smith and infant Larry Joe, plus multiple patients and newborns at Good Samaritan and related facilities.
The DAV Auxiliary will hold its regular meeting on Monday June at 7 30 p m at the home of Mrs Joe Biagi 401 Esther Kamper Adi
Illinois forecast shows temperatures near normal with highs 73 to 78 north and 77 to 78 south and lows 54 to 57 north and 55 to 64 south. A slight cooling toward week end, then a light warming early next week. Precipitation totals one inch or more with frequent showers and thunderstorms across sections.
Washington AP reports Memorial Day weather will be sunny in the west and from the Appalachians to the Atlantic. A revised outlook notes tropical storm Arlene in the Gulf may bring rains or squalls through the middle of the country with showers across the Gulf states to the Central Plains and Great Lakes. Thunderstorms could develop in the East and Rockies while the Northwest sees showers and the Northern Plains stay warm.
The Globe-Democrat will begin publishing from a new home in the International Shoe Company building at 12th and Delmar after signing a 10 year lease. Publisher Richard H. Amberg said operations move to the first and fifth floors as a strike by 332 guildsmen over pensions and job security ends with a Friday settlement.
An unused cemetery mausoleum in Murphysboro has been declared a safety hazard and will be torn down after a cemetery committee inspection. Started in the 1920s, construction was to be financed by selling crypts, but sales lagged and the project failed. The building has served as a tool storage site.
Investigators from Cook County's State's Attorney office raided Calumet City's State Street clubs, arresting 58 men and 43 women as 75 gambling items and weapons were seized. The operation, planned for a year, aimed to wipe out gambling and prostitution, with customers watching as suspects were processed for questioning. Separately, Mt. Vernon official warns farmers must report self employment earnings on time to keep Social Security credits and insured status, or face penalties and loss of benefits.
In Aurora, 13 year old Christopher Egan was slightly cut when two quart beer bottles shattered a living room window at the mayor Paul Egan’s home. A neighbor heard a car stop around 12:30 a.m. and the bottles struck the boy as he rested ill. Police noted ongoing tension between Egan and the city’s police.
Mrs David Bruce Grimm, 32, a farmer's wife and mother of four from near Peoria, won the Illinois title to represent the state in Mrs. America. She and husband attended Iowa State College. they farm 100 acres with children David 13 Charles 11 Stephen 8 and Walter 3. Runners up were Mrs Joyce Levine and Mrs Lois Borgardt.
CHICAGO AP Many Americans start the Memorial Day weekend with millions heading to resorts beaches and outdoor spots. The National Safety Council estimates 40 million automobiles will travel and traffic crashes may cause 260 deaths and 10 000 disabling injuries. The period runs from 6 p.m. today to midnight Sunday. The Associated Press compared fatalities from a recent weekend of the same length when 262 deaths occurred.
In London AP report Britain’s Conference of Animal Welfare Societies, a coalition of about 30 animal welfare groups, formally protested to the U.S. Embassy against America’s spacecraft mission carrying two monkeys. The protest was delivered in writing.
Britannica states that camouflage was initiated by the British in India around the mid 1800s, reflecting early military concealment methods.
Carbondale Illinois AP dedication ceremonies are planned Saturday for Devil's Kitchen Dam a long delayed federal project started in 1940 by the Works Progress Administration halted by World War II and resumed in 1957 under Army Engineers and Fish and Wildlife Service. The project costs exceed 1 million dollars with a second million for recreation facilities. The 810 acre lake will form behind the dam nine miles southeast of Carbondale as part of Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. A drawing June 8 1960 will assign cottage sites among about 1 000 applicants. The dam is 670 feet long 117 feet high and will be the deepest of the refuge lakes. Harry Stiles says wildlife conservation public recreation and industry are its goals. A 24 inch pipe will permit water supply connection if needed.
A Boeing 707 airliner landed in Rome claiming a distance record for commercial jets. From Seattle the aircraft flew over Canada Iceland and Greenland covering about 5800 miles in 11 hours 4 minutes with 40 aboard including William M Allen. Tex Johnston piloted the test flight as officials noted a 604 mph average.
In Grayville Tl an Edwards County farmer reports 200 hogs dead over several days from an unidentified illness. Sam Broster owned 500 hogs of various sizes when the epidemic struck his stock farm in mid May. The disease killed animals ranging from small pigs to sizeable hogs.
Harrisburg police officers Winston Gidcomb and Glen Schwartz, convicted of manslaughter in the July 21 fatal shooting of Margo Hallwood, win a change of judge on their post conviction plea. Judge Clarence E. Wright ruled venue change unnecessary due to cost and witness record burdens. New attorneys argue prior counsel mishandled defense and seek fair treatment in Harrisburg district court.
The mayor arrived at Hotel Emmerson for a casual council discussion and was serenaded with Happy Birthday. A cake with 39 candles was presented as City Manager Harlow Richardson and eight city officials attended, including Demetri Hassakis and Paul Hayes. Also note: twenty two percent of out of state travelers in Arkansas are from Texas.
Washington AP The First Lady Mamie Eisenhower greeted 514 elderly and visually impaired guests at a White House lawn party. She spoke kindly, noted wheelchairs and heat concerns, and the guests enjoyed refreshments as the Marine Corps band played nearby.
Memorial Day observances mark the 91st annual tributes to American war dead from five major wars. Ceremonies span coast to coast from Arlington to Punchbowl, with services at national cemeteries, battlefields, and shrines. 1,128,393 Americans killed in these wars are honored as crowds travel by train, car, and plane for the long weekend.
Storm Arlene is forecast to strike the Louisiana coast tonight with small craft warnings issued from Sabine Texas to St Marks Florida. The stretch includes scattered fishing villages and swamp lands with oil rigs, with Cameron La distant 250 miles to the west recalling Hurricane Audrey of June 1957 which killed over 500 and caused immense damage. No clear signal on intensity before inland movement.
Western foreign ministers met in private session amid Berlin tension as they pressed Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko for a pledge to uphold Allied final authority in West Berlin. Talks focused on garrison rights and secure supply channels while seeking a more favorable Berlin atmosphere for the Soviet view. A possible end date was floated for the talks, with some speculating they could run into early June.
Hollywood report tells of Patricia Ann Carruthers, ex teacher at Minneapolis area junior high, who quit after dress criticism and now performs as Patti White at El Rancho Club in Los Angeles. She left teaching October last year to pursue acting and stripping, stating she still blushes on stage and prefers burlesque to teaching.
H Benny Carpenter has been named local representative of the Coca Cola Bottling Co of Du Quoin. The firm this week took over the distributorship formerly held by Starr Brothers. Carpenter previously managed the Starr Brothers plant, which closed last weekend.
Clayton Bergdahl of Danville Illinois has been appointed assistant manager at the Montgomery Ward store in Mount Vernon effective June 1. His family will move here soon. Bergdahl succeeds Lee Moore who is transferred to Kirkwood Missouri as manager of a new catalog store. Moore will be trained at the Olivette Missouri store and will take over the new store on August 1.
Zeigler Illinois AP voters approved tearing down an old two-story mine office built in 1904. The high school district vote was 183 to 3. The building will be sold to a salvage company and the land turned into a city park. Bell and Zoller Coal Co sold the structure to the district for $1 in 1955. Officials wanted a youth center but repair costs were too high.
The Jefferson county Red Cross chapter directors meet at 7 30 in the First National Bank directors room. John Davidson urges full participation in the United Fund campaign and a nominating committee for next year's officers will be appointed.
County Judge Alvin Lacy Williams of 2120 Richview Road underwent an operation at Good Samaritan Hospital this morning. Attendants reported he was progressing well and getting along nicely after the procedure.
John Foster Dulles who died May 24 left the bulk of his estate to his widow Janet Avery Dulles. The will dated July 25 1958 provides for two of his three children with specific bequests and a trust arrangement. It leaves 10000 to Princeton University and 50000 to a daughter from income of the trust while Bequeathments to his son John Watson Dulles include 100000 outright. The Rev Avery Dulles receives 5000 as a special provision.
