Rescue Efforts Continue In Deep Sea Coal Pit
Officials said the explosion area was not in an undersea seam. Skinner stated every possible measure is being taken to rescue the trapped men. Rescue operations proceed under great difficulties with rescuers using breathing apparatus due to gas fumes. Gas raises risk of further explosions and possible asphyxiation for the trapped workers. The blast began at the top seam about 900 feet below the surface, 1.25 miles from the bottom of the hoisting shaft.
