No Garbage Pickup On Friday Here In Mt Vernon

The City of Mt Vernon will observe Memorial Day on the traditional May 30 date this Friday, so there will be no garbage collection that day and the landfill will be closed. The landfill will be open regular hours Saturday, and the city garbage collection crews will add their Friday routes to their schedule Monday.

Fairfield police report a rifle armed robbery at Davis Quality gas station. An unknown man in a light blue 1968 Buick demanded about $80 from the attendant around 2 35 p m. He is described as five seven, light build, brown hair and beard, driving west alone with a lever action rifle. No injuries reported.

Illinois Crime Up 15 Percent in 1974 Across Most Counties

Serious crime rose 15.3 percent statewide in 1974 with 4,939.8 crimes per 100,000 residents, up from 4,285.3 in 1973. In 76 counties the rate increased, 26 decreased. Wabash County saw the sharpest jump 231.3 percent due to burglaries thefts and auto thefts, while Bond County fell 61.6 percent. Officials note small counties exaggerate percentage changes. Three Thefts Reported In County Over Weekend

The county sheriff's deputies logged three thefts in the past weekend. Gasoline was stolen from storage tanks and a tractor on Routes Centralia and Centra lia from locks and hasps. Marksman Shoots Down Power Lines In Woodlawn Boyd

About a hundred homes in the Woodlawn-Boyd area lost electricity for two hours yesterday after a rifle-toting marksman shot power lines. Andy Birds of Tri ee Electric said traces of sap were found on the ends of the line, indicating a bullet broke it. Neighbors reported a vehicle in the area. the wire was shot in the middle of a span, suggesting the aim was not at regulators. Repair crews worked from Memorial Day holidays and restored power within about two hours.
