Scholarship to Harvard Won by Ex Mt Vernon Student
Donald Louis Cook, grandson of W. E. Williford and former Mt. Vernon residents, becomes the first Alabama student to win a national Harvard scholarship. He graduated from Ensley High School, Birmingham, and also earned a $50 cash award and an alternate for a $200 NHS scholarship after leading the Ensley NHS chapter. He competed in a national contest by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Coal Miner Emanuel Cooper Killed in Mine Blast Near West Frankfort
Emanuel Cooper aged 52, a mine driller at Orient Mine No 2 near West Frankfort, was killed yesterday when a powder charge exploded during work. The accident occurred May 25 and is being investigated by mine safety officials.

An all day Memorial Day program at Richardson Hill Cemetery near Dahlgren includes a Revolutionary War stage drama by Carl Drennan of Mt Vernon dressed in period uniform with a rifle over a century old. Events start at 10 30 a m with graveside honors, then a forenoon musical program, 1 30 p m colors and speeches by local figures, and a grave side service for Thomas Hillman ending with a firing salute and taps.

Big Scout Merit Badge Show At Olney Illinois
The Ambran Wabash Area Council hosts its first Merit Badge Show in Olney on June 2 and 3 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with 100 to 150 booths. The weekend brought generally fair conditions for most regions with showers and thunderstorms in eastern Kansas, northern Oklahoma, and the Great Lakes. Gulf coast rain and scorching heat affected the southwest with Yuma reaching 112 and El Centro 110. A tornado hit a livestock farm near Burlington Junction Missouri killing 30 hogs as part of a storm system that hit St Joseph with two severe thunderstorms and winds up to 74 mph. Rosecrans Air Field also suffered damage.
