Outbreak Of Thefts And Burglaries In Mt Vernon

An outbreak of burglaries and thefts was reported to police. James Montgomery said someone broke into Grand Avenue Barber Shop last night, stealing cash and an electric clipper, razors, and an electric vibrator. Gene Irvin reported his home broken into at No 1 Bishops Court with a $41 billfold and $3 coin purse taken. Pollock Lumber Company office was broken into but nothing missing. Chris Pearson reported a stolen rod and reel and other fishing gear from his car and a lawnmower missing. David Parker reported his Western Flyer bicycle stolen near the high school.

Relative Dies In St. Louis Michigan?

Mrs. Annetta Wilson of St. Louis a niece of Mrs. Grace Riggs of 508 South Seventh Street died at City Hospital in St. Louis after a lingering illness. Born in Benton, Illinois, she was the daughter of John W. and Beatrice Little Williams. The body will lie in state at Freeman Funeral Home in Benton with funeral arrangements pending. Survived by husband Troy three sons Larry Bobby Davy a daughter Jane Elsen a brother and a sister.

Births at Jefferson Memorial Hospital two new arrivals

Mr and Mrs Merritt Strickland of 1012 Conger Avenue welcomed a son at Jefferson Memorial Hospital last evening at 9 45 weighing 8 pounds 7 4 ounces and named Merritt Stevens. Mr and Mrs Marion Hummell of Fairfield welcomed a daughter at Jefferson Memorial Hospital this morning at 9 3 weighing 6 pounds 13 ounces and she has not been named.

Memorial Service at Sugar Camp Cemetery Sunday

Memorial services will be held this Sunday May 27 at Sugar Camp cemetery in the southeast corner of Jefferson county seven and a half miles south of Belle Rive on the old Goshen Road. The site, among the oldest in the county, holds Civil War Spanish American War and World Wars I and II veterans. The cemetery is being cleaned to honor graves with small U S flags provided by Mrs. Lewis Brake. Music and speaking will follow with W Bell as principal speaker.

Weather map shows rain and wind across eastern states

The eastern states experienced rain and wind while spring returned to the central United States. Wet spots persisted in Texas Michigan and the northern Rockies. warmth remained in the southwest and Gulf Coast. Yesterday's highs favored the Rio Grande and lower Colorado valleys with 98 degrees in Glasgow Montana.

A mattress and bedding were destroyed by fire at 6 30 a m today at the home of Mrs Ollie Pierce 607 Main Street Mt Vernon Firefighters reported smoke damage to the residence and there were no injuries.
