Bicentennial Day Celebrated by Opdyke Belle Rive Third Graders

Opdyke-Belle Rive School third graders marked Bicentennial Day with colonial costumes and biographies of Revolutionary War heroes. Students read from horn books, used slates, held spelling bees and ciphering matches won by Tom McPherson and Meligsa Horton, and recited period poems. The day ended with butter making demos and a colonial snack served by teachers.

Bluford Girl Hurt When Train Delays Rescue Crew

Lannie Pace Home Damaged By Fire

A double wide mobile home on the Davis Highway two and a half miles east of Route 7 was heavily damaged by fire on Friday afternoon. Jefferson Fire Protection District firefighters reported the scene and said the home belonged to Lannie Pace.

Head Start Opens June 21 at Andy Hall School

The Head Start program for low income pre schoolers will open June 21 at Andy Hall School with 60 to 70 students expected this year. Classes run mornings with bus transport both ways. Four teachers four paid aides and student volunteers staff the program.

Black Businessmen Aid White Victim Blinded in Robbery

In Chicago, black businessmen raised funds to cover hospital expenses for Nicholas Comito a 57 year old man blinded during a May robbery at his Austin home. The fund totaled 23152 with 15 major donations and 600 small contributions from the black community. Two suspects in the shooting are black.

An examination by The Chicago Tribune found Mt. Vernon architects Clifford Fields and George Magee as major donors to Gov. Dan Walker. Fields contributed 2500 dollars and Magee 500 dollars to Walker's campaign. Their firm FGM Inc. received over 480000 dollars in state contracts from June 1974 to June 1975.
