Perjury Charges Denied In Vesco Case

Former U S attorney general John N. Mitchell and former commerce secretary Maurice H. Stans pleaded innocent to perjury conspiracy and obstructing a federal inquiry into financier Robert L. Vesco. Also pleading innocent were Vesco ally Barry D. Sears, with Vesco reportedly in Costa Rica and under warrants abroad.

Bluford man killed in one-car crash near Mt. Vernon

James William Pool 27 of Bluford died early Sunday when his car left Route 15 east of Mt. Vernon, veered off the road, rolled at least once and lay straddling Seven Mile Creek. Coroner John Richardson said Pool appeared to die instantly. Police noted the crash likely occurred about 3 a.m. and body was found near noon. Pool was a welder for Southern Way, married to Christy Bateman, and a veteran. He was born March 13, 1946, in Gideon, Missouri, son of Carl and Sadie Pool. He attended Mt. Vernon Township High, served in the U.S. Army, and belonged to Park Avenue Baptist Church and local clubs.

Two Metropolis Youths Die in Arkansas Crash

In Forest City Arkansas two Metropolis Illinois youths were killed and a sister injured when their car struck a bridge over the St Francis River on I 40 east of Forest City. Victims were 17 year old Russel Daniel Mills and 16 year old Glenda Fort. Mills sister Pat Mills, 20, was seriously injured.

Peacock Returns Home After Mt. Vernon Adventure

Mrs. Peacock the peacock wandered for a week after escaping from the Southerds of Salem Road. Local calls followed the missing bird report in the Register-News. Jerry Mays cornered the bird at Berg Salvage Yard and the Southerds retrieved it, vowing not to let it out again. The bird had been near a woods before heading toward town and appeared hungry but in good shape.
