The Associated Press reports heavy thunderstorms dumped up to six inches of rain in parts of the Plains with eastern Kansas and northwest Missouri under a flash flood watch. The Onaga area received over six inches and Rossville over five. Twelve tornadoes were recorded across Nebraska Kansas North Dakota Oklahoma and North Carolina, with no deaths or injuries reported and overall light damage. Remaining showers dotted the Texas Gulf coast Florida and Alabama as temps ranged from 31 to 80.

Pittsburg Girl Drowns in Mining Pit Near New Burnside
Rescue workers recovered the body of 14 year old Rieta Mitchell of Pittsburg after she drowned in a strip mining pit about one and a half miles west of New Burnside Thursday evening. The body was taken to Cosby Funeral Home in the Springs. Recovery was by Johnson County Civil Defense volunteers and a Johnson County deputy with state police.
