Clark Hinrich Dies At Age 68 Rites Wednesday

Clark W. Hinrich died at 7 15 am today at his home on the 8 Davis Road in Shiloh township He was 68 years three months and two days old A former employee of the State Game Farm he was a World War I veteran and a member of American Legion Post 141 He is survived by Grace M Champ his wife two daughters a stepson a sister a brother and five grandchildren The funeral will be Wednesday at 1040 am at Myers Chapel with Rev E Pifer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Burial Park St Louis Mo The body will lie at Myers Chapel after 2 pm Tuesday for visiting friends

Vernon city employee died at his home 1108 Prairie Sunday at 6 45 p m aged 69 years four months and 29 days Funeral arrangements are complete and body moved to Campbell and Parker Funeral Home Survived by three children Mrs Bertha Jones Mrs Lucy Avant of Mt Vernon and Mrs Georgie Jones of Indianapolis one sister Mrs Alice Washington of Pace Mississippi six grandchildren and two great grandchildren His wife Sarah died in 1945.

Hitler's Panzer Leader Guderian Dies at 65

The death of Col. Gen. Heinz Guderian, famed mastermind of the Nazis panzer tactics, was announced from Schwangau Germany. He died Friday after a chronic liver ailment while living in a home for the aged. Guderian created panzer divisions that swept into Poland and helped plan the thrust into France in 1940, later captured by the American army in 1945 and released.

Awning Fire Damages Veatch Apartments at Maple

Fire crews fought a blaze at Veatch Apartments 829 Maple Sunday at 12 30 p m damaging awnings and window casings. Investigators said the cause was not known and firemen controlled the flames.

Two Bands To Play For Benefit Dance At Armory Friday

A benefit dance for the annual Cancer Crusade in Jefferson county is set for Friday night at the Mt. Vernon Armory. Sponsored by the Rotary Club, the event runs 8:00 PM to midnight and features Curt Bradley and his Egyptian Aires with Mary Ann Parcelet, plus a local jam session and square dancing led by Joe Haase of Carterville. Rotarians host informal dress, soft drinks served, and no liquor allowed.

Jefferson county youngsters have two weeks left to name the Mt Vernon city park zoo lion cub. Prizes totaling 50 dollars will go to three winners 25 for first 15 for second and 10 for third. Entries must include proposed name entrant name age address school and be mailed or placed in a carpet box at the park before May 31. Tuscola Youth Faces Three Felony Charges in Taxi Robbery

A 10 year old youth slugged and robbed a Champaign taxi driver after a 45 mile ride. Paul Donald Smith of near Tuscola was seized by state police and brought to Mattoon where he admitted the robbery and assault on Leonard Fiscus of Champaign. Fiscus was left in Urbana after the attack and treated for a concussion. Smith was arraigned before a Police Magistrate and held to the grand jury on motor vehicle larceny armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. he said he had served a one year assault sentence at Vandalia State Penal Farm.

Collision on Tolle Road injures no one in ditch crash

A car and a truck collided on Tolle Road about three miles north of the city shortly before eight this morning. Marvin Austin of RFD 6 drove the truck and Harley Mullins of RFD 4 drove the car. Deputy Smokey Wood investigated. both vehicles were considerably damaged.

Russians Try To Recruit Britons For Espionage

London report says two Soviet diplomats expelled last week made at least four attempts to recruit Britons for espionage. Selwyn Lloyd told Parliament he warned Soviet ambassador Jacob Malik that the pair abused diplomatic status. The majors left for Russia Friday night.
