The auction of a modern house built by Mt. Vernon high school students yesterday failed to meet the minimum, with the highest bid at 1719 Oakland Avenue below the required amount. Built over two years, the home attracted interest but did not sell.
Los Angeles actor John Agar known for Shirley Temple's ex husband needed coffee before a marriage license to Loretta Barnett Combs. County Clerk rejected him as unsteady, then approved after a second attempt. Agar, 30, was previously divorced in 1949 and faced a drunk driving arrest in January in Los Angeles. Trial set for July 20 on two similar charges.
More than 400 soldiers at Ft Meade Maryland and Arlington Virginia reported stomach pains and vomiting. Officials suspect food poisoning though no cause yet. 284 cases at Ft Meade with 95 hospitalizations and about 60 additional cases at the Arlington air force camp.
Sir Stafford Cripps, former British chancellor of the exchequer, is reported by his wife to suffer a tubercular spinal infection and an abdominal complication described as a rare and dangerous disease. The statement, issued in Zurich, notes ongoing anxiety over his health.
CENTRALIA Illinois May 17 Southern Illinois University flag dropped at the North Pole during a 17% hour round trip from Fairbanks Alaska. Capt H M Richard Air Force weather observer reported by his mother that he may be the first to drop a school flag at the Pole. Wayne Mann another alumnus sent the flag.

London reports Field Marshal Lord Birdwood aged 85, famed for leading ANZAC forces at Gallipoli and evacuating troops from the peninsula. He was wounded there in 1915, later commanded forces on the Somme, became army chief in India in 1925, and received a baronetcy and a $50,000 grant. His wife died in 1947 after 53 years of marriage. he suffered a heart attack last year.

Memorial services will be held at Sugar Camp Cemetery seven and one half miles south of Belle Rive on the old Goshen Road. The program opens with grave decorating in the morning followed by music and speaking in the afternoon. W. W. Bell, who delivered the principal address last year, will again speak. Trustees extend invitation to all.

Torrential rains pound the Panhandle and Plains ending drought in parts of Texas while heavy flows flood western Kansas. Eleven children were rescued from a school bus stranded on a country road near Clinton Oklahoma as waters rose. National Guard and Red Cross disaster units aided western Kansas.
